Overview

I cannot guarantee that you will become a great writer because you are reading this book. But I can guarantee that you will be a better one - that you will come away from these pages with new - and practical - insight into writing for the satisfaction of the reader.

But the writer! He has a sometimes maddening handicap. He has to be artist enough to overcome the medium in which he works, that sterile, boring page, in order to allow his art to come into existence in the only theater in the world where it can live as literature - the theater of the reader's imagination.

Now, isn't that an incredible thought? Literary art does not exist in books. It's locked up in them, yes. But because of its unique nature, that art form which is communicated by the written word is actually experienced only in the minds of the writers and their readers, in their imaginations.

But when a performance succeeds on that theater of the imagination, words transcend their physical existence on the page. They create a unique opportunity which no other art form, even in the hands of its finest masters, can claim: They allow the writer alone to command all of the arts. While the musician and the composer perform their music for the ear, and the painter and the sculptor create their works for the eye, the writer, through words, creates upon the stage of the reader's imagination all the paintings and sculptures and overtures and concertos and operas and ballets of which his talent is capable. He uses not one or two of the senses but all of them...

What People Are Saying

Barry Jacobs
Like all such books, Dramatic Technique is full of practical advice for people who want to improve their writing skills. What is most helpful about this book's approach to the problems of writing - both fiction and nonfiction - is Bahr's insistence that the writer regard himself not as a writer but as a dramatist writing for the theater of the reader's imagination... I would recommend it to any aspiring writer and suggest it for classroom use by any instructor of creative writing.
—Barry D. Jacobs, Professor of English,Montclair State University
C. Terry Cline, Jr.
Here is help for the amateur and the professional, the experienced writer and any novice struggling to understand 'conflict' and 'characterization.' Dramatic Technique is the rarest of self-help books - slick, educational, and interesting. Robert Bahr has made a valuable contribution to the legions of would-be authors trying to master the daunting task of producing good writing with commercial appeal. (C. Terry Cline, Jr.)
