Overview

This in-depth yet accessible dinosaur drawing guide combines humor, creativity, and the latest dino research to show artists young and old how to breathe life into drawings of their prehistoric favorites.

Prehistoric Pencil Power!
Even though they lived some 65 million years ago, dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles continue to rule today. From movies to comics and cartoons, these ancient, giant beasts are everywhere you turn. Of course, who wants to just read about or watch these dinos when you can learn how to use pencils, pens, markers, and more to draw your very own?

Cartoonist James Silvani combines easy-to-follow art exercises with the latest, greatest dino-facts to help you create fun and cool dinosaur doodles all by yourself. With lessons on old favorites like T-rex and stegosaurus, as well as lesser-known (but still awesome) creatures like the massive argentinosaurus, Draw-a-Saurus has everything the dinosaur fan could ever ask for (outside of their very own pet dino!).

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Draw-a-Saurus was a wonderful surprise. Not only does it provide solid instructions on the basics of drawing these magnificent terrible lizards, but it also includes great facts about them and a great deal of humor that both parents and children can enjoy. Recommended. A+”
—Josh Begley, The Fandom Post

“While it's goal is to teach you how to draw a 'saurus (see how that works?), you can still enjoy it if you're a complete artistic luddite. I know this because I loved it and I can't even draw a decent cube. Silvani combines real drawing instruction with adorable and hilarious editorial commentary (the "editor" notes are amazing) which makes this book work as both a teaching manual and source of entertainment.”
—Geek Girl Diva

“With delightful touches of humor throughout the book, James Silvani shows readers how they, with a little knowledge and some practice, can create their own dinosaur drawings. It is clear that he does not take himself too seriously and that he absolutely loves dinosaurs, which makes him easy to connect with and wonderfully entertaining.”
—Marya Jansen-Gruber, Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Review

Gr 3–6—Infused with humor and dino facts, this guide takes kids through the steps that will turn lines and circles into terrifying (or adorable) creatures. After a quick introduction and list of supplies, Silvani provides a brief anatomy lesson and explains how to reduce bones to simple lines and shapes that form the structure that can be used as the basis to a drawing. The four main types of dinosaurs that Silvani offers are theropods, sauropods, armored dinosaurs, and ornithopods. What sets this title apart from other drawing books is the wealth of information the author imparts when describing how to draw each dinosaur. For example, Silvani instructs kids interested in drawing an apatosaurus to draw a small mouth because the mouth was only used for gathering food; chewing took place elsewhere. He also includes a section on the dinosaurs' environment and information on other prehistoric creatures. Although this book includes a lot of factual material, Silvani urges readers to use their imaginations, too. Hand this to kids who are ready to take their passion for drawing and dinosaurs—or both—to the next level.—Rachael Myers-Ricker, Horace Mann School, Bronx, NY

If you are looking for a how to book for drawing this book is a great choice. The chapters are based on different dinosaurs. The last chapter tells you where the different dinosaurs live. That way you can draw the dinosaur in its natural habitat. They teach you step by step how to draw a detailed dinosaur. Children who are interested in drawing will be able to learn a lot from this book. They will be able to draw a dinosaur that looks as if it could walk off their page. I would definitely recommend this book for children of all ages. If your child loves dinosaurs and drawing then this book will become a favorite. This book also provides information about the different dinosaurs. So not only will your child learn how to draw they will also learn interesting facts. This book will bring the dinosaurs to life.  (reviewed by S.Wall-mother of 2 boys) DISCLOSURE: A complimentary copy was provided to us by Blogging For Books review program in exchange for a review. "Draw-A-Saurus" by James Silvani is a tutorial in drawing dinosaurs. This is a pretty inclusive book, with 150 pages of tips, tricks, and tutorials in the art of drawing dinos. This book definitely breaks down the shape, size, and technique of bringing some of the most famous dinosaurs to life on paper. What I liked about this book is that it breaks down, step by step, how to draw a variety of different dinosaurs. This isn't just a general overview of drawing them, it really gets into the specifics of each different kind of dinosaur and their distinctive characteristics. This book makes it look much easier than it really is to put pencil to paper and draw dinosaurs, but I found a lot of the tips that Silvani offers to be really helpful. Also, he really breaks a long and complicated process down into manageable steps that you can follow. My dinosaurs didn't look as awesome as his, but I know they looked much better than they would have without following his steps. Overall I would say that this book is a great way to develop art skills, as it does offer a lot of helpful tips for drawing dinosaurs, and I'm sure that some of those tips can translate into drawing other items as well. I would definitely give this book a 5/5, because it made it seem simple by breaking down the drawing into smaller steps and describing the steps in a simple way. This would be a great gift for the art lover, or for the young child that enjoys drawing as well.
