Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Young artists can build their drawing skills in this addition to the "Art Smart" series from QEB. Shading, frottage, perspective, and facial expressions are some of the techniques featured in the twelve projects. In most, Walker gives detailed instructions on how to implement the technique, while still allowing for student creativity. Some projects assume some prior drawing experience. In "Jungle Lines," for example, no help is given for drawing animals beyond "imagine where you can place animals, hiding or peering out from behind jungle plants." The illustrations are quite helpful in filling in gaps, demonstrating steps, and presenting samples of finished projects. A key at the top of the page informs readers of the degree of skill needed for each project, from a "Quick Creative Fix" (one handprint) to a "Creative Masterpiece" (four handprints). Supplies include basic art and drawing materials such as pencils (HB recommended), watercolor pencils, pastels, and drawing paper—each of which are nicely defined in a handy appendix. Students will also find tips and definitions of techniques at the end of the book, along with a brief index. In general, this is a good starting place for independent creative projects, with plenty of ideas for turning student sketches and doodles into finished works of art suitable for gifts or displaying. Gr 3–6—An emphasis on technique distinguishes this bright and colorful series. Twelve attractive projects per volume, many of them resulting in useful objects, give kids a chance to learn and practice techniques such as weaving, stenciling, and frottage. Specialized materials are not required, and most kids will be able to achieve success with the majority of these projects, regardless of their level of artistic talent. The books were written by art teachers and it shows. Tracing and collage are offered as alternatives to drawing, and many drawing and painting projects are abstract or begin with random shapes. The trickiest skills are the various stitches used in Make It!, and, unfortunately, the instructions, which are usually quite good in this series, are not quite up to this task. Photographs often show the finished projects while drawings illustrate the process.
