Overview

Draw Me a House is a playbook for budding architects and anyone interested in the built environment. Illustrated by Thibaud Herem, it celebrates the primary delights of architecture, inviting people of all ages to color in, think about, doodle and engage with basic architectural elements. Both educational and entertaining, Draw Me a House takes the reader on a journey through architectural styles from Gothic church spires to contemporary eco-design, and out the other side to the world of outright fantasy. From completing the columns on the Parthenon to thinking up an alternative top to the Chrysler Building; from drawing a deluxe doghouse to designing a transport system for the year 2040, this book will serve as a springboard for the imagination--a fresh and playful source of stimulation and inspiration. Thibaud Herem's beautiful drawings have a warmth and a humor that jumps off the page, and the ideas have an equal lightness of touch. Printed on a heavy, creamy uncoated paper that begs to be doodled upon and colored in, and sporting a laser-cut cover that highlights its tactile appeal, Draw Me a House is a book that will delight children and adults alike.

Editorial Reviews

With clever springboards, this playful hardcover coaxes out the dormant inner architects that most of us spend our lifetime concealing. Draw Me a House drives us on an appetizing cook's tour of architectural styles from stately Grecian columns to 21st sun-reflecting high-rise fantasies. Its stated goal is to inspire you to join in; thus, its pages are printed on heavy, creamy uncoated paper that invites readers to add their own drawings or coloring. A creative pastime for the whole family.

This is a clever book allowing children to learn about diverse architectural structures and styles, big and small... from the recognized Bilbao Guggenheim Art Museum in Spain to the utility of an igloo; from ancient Egypt, to Victorian interiors, and on to Green homes.  Along with giving simply-stated interesting facts, young people have the opportunity to create and add personal  touches by adding color enhancement to the illustrations, or to complete a partially developed drawing.  Additionally, the book includes an array of artistic architectural concepts- doors knockers, furniture, decorative arts, lighting, houseboats, streetscapes, bridges, and more. I am a designer and arts educator, and I incorporate the ideas into classroom lessons. This book gets kids to think, draw, and dream. It's perfect for a classroom of many, or for one-on-one home use.
