Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
Designed to reinforce math concepts through hands-on activities, this is a creative volume. The author introduces twenty basic math concepts. These include counting, odd and even numbers, shapes, grouping, and relative positions. The author then asks the reader to demonstrate knowledge by drawing and coloring pictures. The drawings are simple enough for most children to attempt. For example, in lesson five, the author explains the concept of grouping by twos and threes. She asks questions about grouping and shows how to draw ladybugs. Then she encourages the reader to draw and color her own ladybugs and create groups with them. The table of contents and index provide good starting points for planning. The note to parents and teachers explains the process and gives a web resource for further explanations. This book is a good supplement for an introduction to elementary math concepts, especially in classrooms. Furthermore, the author begins by giving readers/teachers a list of useful equipment.
