Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The urge to create fantasy worlds probably goes back to the beginning of conscious thought. This book by artist Alexander, with contributions by freelance illustrator Martin McKenna, is intended for art students or serious artists and teaches what one needs to know to draw and paint 21st-century fantasy landscapes and cities. With more than 200 color illustrations, it provides a good introduction to traditional art materials and digital work, as well as to the fundamentals of drawing and painting in a variety of media. The book is organized into four chapters: "Basics of Art," "Elements of Landscape," "Creating Fantasy Realms," and "Gallery." The latter is a showcase of a land of giants, mysterious cities, deserts of ice and sand, underwater domains, and fantasy ruins. Libraries with books like Neal Yamamoto's Superhero Explosion: 60 Easy Exercises for Drawing Comics! or Steve Miller and Bryan Baugh's SCARED!: How To Draw Fantastic Horror Comic Characters will want this volume. If you want to draw fantasy landscapes, this book can really help
This is one of my biggest sources for finding landscape inspiration, second only to the incredible
landscapes found on earth. The author discusses finding inspiration, using references, using color,
perspective, and time of day, and also shows the basic elements of landscape and how you can use
them. Along with that Martin McKenna also provides artwork from other artists, showing the realms
they've created and how they created them. Even if you don't paint this book is very helpful.
