This is not a typical how-to instructional book for those who wish to learn to draw these awesome beasts. It is, in fact, much more. It explains that you must know your subject as fully as possible in order to portray it as accurately as possible. To that end, the author provides detailed commentary throughout the book alongside his illustrated examples. These combined features encourage aspiring artists to use his suggestions but also to incorporate what they see in their own imaginations and to explore further. This thorough book includes information about dragons of many different species, dragon hunters and other creatures found within the world of the dragon. The drawing instructions themselves are not exactly step-by-step formulaic directions but rather loose guidelines with a healthy dose of anatomical and historical education. Readers will come away from this book educated in the anatomy, classifications, history and strange beauty of fantastical creatures of times past. They will also gain a greater appreciation of those who, in modern times, attempt to capture the elusive creatures using pencil and paper. Beyond a doubt, this will make them better artists themselves. The meticulous work and thought put into creating this book makes it an excellent resource for intermediate to advanced artists. Drawing Dragons and Those Who Hunt Them: The Ultimate Book of Drawing the Ultimate Beastby Christopher Hart
From Smaug to Puff, from wyverns to Hungarian Horntails, dragons are everyone’s favorite mythological beasts. In Christopher Hart's new book Drawing Dragons and Those Who Hunt Them, he brings more power, drama, and depth to dragons than has ever been seen before. Towering, fierce, and merciless, yet devoted to their young, these dragons prey upon the medieval villagers of fantasy’s Dark Ages. Hart masterfully unfolds a story of dragon against man, illustrated with remarkable splash pages and two lavishly illustrated fold-out gatefolds of action-packed battles. Step-by-step how-tos on drawing a dragon’s fire-breathing head and awe-inspiring body, dragon horns, fire, attacking dragons, dragon flight patterns, dragon birth and death, dragon catacombs, baby dragons, hunting dragons, weapons, and even the mysterious dragon graveyard show fantasy artists how to create their own stunning, startling dragon worlds.
Gr 9 Up A stunning textured cover, with the title in gold typeface, will attract fantasy and dragon fans to this sophisticated book. In the comprehensive art instruction that follows, teens will discover how drawing dragons begins with basic shapes and the gradual addition of lines and features. Black-and-white sketches and full-color illustrations (nearly two dozen are full page), bring to life the enormous creatures. Artists will develop more understanding of the dragon head, eye, skull, fire-breathing techniques, horns, body, basic anatomy, skeleton, spine, tail, claws, textures, wings, and so much more. Various species are discussed, including the thorn dragon, the hydra, the colossus, and hellworms. Other topics mentioned are birth, lairs, death, battle between man and beast, and poachers. There are two foldout pages and boxes of text covering inking drawings, shading, coloring fire, rare breeds, the tail in action, and attenuated spikes. Typeface for labeling drawings is very small, and there are a few typos. A good addition for serious artists and dragon fans.-Augusta R. Malvagno, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
