Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Contrary to the publicity on this book, it doesn't contain techniques "so easy that anyone--from doodler to advanced artist--can master in minutes." This is instead a highly challenging manual on achieving effects close to photographic with little more than a sharp pencil. Hillberry, an artist and teacher, offers splendid demonstrations on creating the look of metal, wood, hair, and even cracked glass. To his credit, Hillberry admits one needs to have already grasped shape, proportion, and perspective before approaching this level of realism. Highly recommended for collections that need more than the basics.

Mr. Hilberry has put together a fantastic instructional book together for the pencil artist with the basic skills under their belt who is now looking to hone their technique. This book fulfills its title by teaching how to draw photo realistic textures of all kinds via great tutorials, superb pictures of technique examples and his finished work, all tied together with very easy to read text. Being a relatively new pencil drawing artist myself I can attest that his book helped me make several large steps up with the quality of my drawing. Its rare to find as gifted an artist as Mr. Hillberry sharing his technique and insight with us really makes it this a stand out. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was a 'must have'. As a matter of fact I'm wearing out my copy due to referring back to it all the time.

I have been languishing in drawing for some years, never been able to hurtle realism or accuracy of textures in drawings. watching some of J.D. Hillberry Videos my renderings improved. I decided to purchase and read his book. Glad I did, I understand how to elevate my drawing to realism with textures and layering. Can not wait to get started Thanks J.D. Thomas A. Robb
