Overview

For centuries Fair Castle stood proudly on English soil...until an eccentric millionaire bought and transported it, stone by stone, to America. Today, the ancient stronghold is home to his heiress, lovely Elinor MacLeish and her family...and it is also home to the ghosts that refuse to leave their ancestral dwelling.

Willian Braddock, also known as Lord Norwood, was once an impoverished English peer. But having made his fortune, he has set his sights on America. Fair Castle was once his. And now, he wants it back.

When the English nobleman meets the headstrong American heiress, the battle is joined. Someone— or something— wants the castle back, and will stop at nothing to get it. But who will lose Fair Castle, and who will lose their hearts?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Is Fair Castle haunted? For years, Elinor MacLeish and her family have been assuring tourists to the tower in upstate New York that it is not. Now, with the arrival of Fair Castle's former owner, William Braddock, Lord Norwood, the castle is besieged by a series of mysterious accidents and shadowy apparitions. Will has come to buy back his family's birthright and move the castlestone by stonefrom upstate New York to its original site in Dibble, England. Elinor refuses; not only does she depend on the castle for inspiration for her children's books, she knows that selling will displace the three generations of MacLeishes now living there. When historian Tucker O'Tool enters the picture and starts unearthing ancient secrets concerning Will's family, Elinor realizes that Tucker is out to destroy Will. What she doesn't understand, is why. This humorous, well-crafted and inventive novel is certain to establish Stockenberg (Beyond Midnight) as a major voice in women's fiction. (June)
Library Journal
Raised in a castle that her eccentrically romantic grandfather had transported from England to the Hudson River Valley, children's book illustrator Elinor MacLeish is stunned when William Braddock, Lord Norwood, the heir of Fair Castle's original owner, appears on the family doorstep, determined to return the castle to Englandand willing to make an offer her grandparents can't refuse. Well-developed, likable protagonists; appealing relatives; an intriguing villain; and a ghostly pair of ancient lovers propel the plot of this occasionally confusing but well-written story with a definite Gothic touch. Stockenberg (Beyond Midnight, St. Martin, 1996) has written a number romances with a paranormal twist, including her Rita-winning Emily's Ghost (Dell, 1992). She lives in Massachusetts. (KR)

It's interesting and well-written with great characters. I read nearly the whole thing in one day. However, there was too much detail of lust and sex for me. I skipped over parts past my comfort level. If you try to stay more on the buttoned up side of things, steer clear.

This book is wonderful. It's funny and enchanting. I love the characters especially the heroine. She's clever and sweet and really makes you fall in love with her. Antoinette Stockerberg's writing is rich and entertaining. She's charismatic and insightful. She keeps you guessing and then delivers a good ending.

Once again Antoinette Stockenberg has done an outstanding job. This was a fun book with lots of humor and mystery and a good love story. When I first started reading this book, I was hesitant because it was almost 1,000 pages but I found it to be an extremely interesting quick read and a great novel. The author's description of her characters, the settings, etc., makes you feel like you are part of the book. Antoinette Stockenberg is a great author and I look forward to reading more of her novels. I highly recommend this book as it was a fun read.

I do agree with some of the other reviewers that Elinor is a brat at the beginning of the story. But the transformation of her relationship (with who? No spoiler here) was fun to read. After reading some truly dismal romances, I really appreciate this author!

Really enjoyed the characters and the story. Did not think it was inappropriate with the love story at all so do not be afraid to give a try. I will definitely try another book by this author.

I had so much fun reading this book. A battle over an English castle moved to modern day America? Not your typical plot. The American heroine's ancestors are Scottish, the hero is a Brit, so sparks fly throughout. The struggle is complicated by a mystery, with eerie scenes adding to the suspense. A mix of humor and goosebumps, and the characters are all so realistic that you feel you're there. Highly recommend!
