Overview

This is a comprehensive account of the eight religious wars between the Christian West and the Muslim East that dominated the Middle Ages. Calling themselves "pilgrims of Christ," thousands of Europeans from all stations in life undertook the harsh and bloody quest to reclaim Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and Christ's tomb for Christendom.

Robert Payne brings to life every step of the Crusaders' thousand-mile journey: the deprivation; the desperate, rapacious, and brutal raids for food and supplies; the epic battles for Antioch, Jerusalem, and Acre; the barbarous treatment of captives; and the quarreling European princes who vied for power and wealth in the Near East. An epic tale of the glorious and the base, of unshakable faith and unspeakable atrocities, The Dream and the Tomb captures not only the events but the very essence of the Crusades.

Editorial Reviews

History Magazine
The Dream and the Tomb examines the eight holy wars that took place between 1095 and 1270, exploring both the political desires of the princes and the suffering of the ordinary people. With the understanding and depth of the author, Robert Payne, these rich and memorable details bring the past to life.
Washington Post Book World
Excellent. Payne is at the height of his powers. Reading this history of the distant past turns the present Middle East crisis suddenly transparent.
The New York Times
No man alive can write more beautiful prose than Robert Payne.
From Barnes & Noble
This exquisitely written general history summons to life the Crusader battalions that hewed out kingdoms in Christ's native land nearly 1,000 years ago. The author weaves a glittering tapestry of a time when splendor vied with baseness, piety with greed, and courage with folly. This is the story of the clash of East and West, when possession of an ancient sepulcher mattered most in the life and death of men.

    Fine book, lousy maps

Well written, engrossing history. But accompanying maps are pathetic--no attempt has been made to match the maps with each other or to the place names and routes of the crusaders described in the text. The author died before the book was published, so the editor is the culprit here.
