She didn't want to need him.

Murder brought self-help guru Rachel de Luca and Detective Mason Brown together. Their shared secrets drove them apart. But now they're together again in this riveting novella that begins where New York Times bestselling author Maggie Shayne's Sleep with the Lights On ended.

She may have been blind for twenty years, but Rachel's always had an uncanny gift for seeing through people—and she distrusts her assistant's new boyfriend at first sight. Amy isn't interested in Rachel's misgivings, though. She's too eager to celebrate Thanksgiving by introducing her family to the new man in her life.

Then Amy doesn't show up for the holiday….

Desperate to find her missing friend, Rachel has no choice but to turn to Mason. Their investigation into Amy's disappearance takes them ever deeper into danger—and reignites the attraction that they've both sworn to resist. Now it's a race against time as these reluctant partners fight to stave off passion and save a life.

Look for Wake to Darkness, the next installment in this suspenseful series, coming in December from Harlequin MIRA and Maggie Shayne.

    A total of 65 pages

I preordered this book and eagerly awaited it. I was so disappointed. No where on the cover or in the overview was a mention that this book was a short story. I do not think it is a prequel, as at the end, it makes a pitch for the next installment, which costs $3.99. I wonder, since it stated "installment," if that means it is a short story also? This book is extremely violent and very, very gory. There is a lot of cursing. The plot, while a bit different from most murder mysteries is very disturbing. The end almost made me ill and I like intense murder mysteries. The ending also did not bring much resolution to the story. The introduction of Shayne's newest heroine and this series is off to a rocky start in my opinion. I will give it a star for editing and one for originality. I seriously doubt, I will purchase any more of Shayne's books. I feel as if I was taken advantage of. Because this book is so violent, gory, and disturbing, I recommend it for adults only.

    Love this couple!

Short & sweet, it's the perfect transition novella to bridge Sleep with the Lights On and Wake to Darkness. Rachel & Mason have got some terrific chemistry. Maggie's delivered another great read!

    Love

I love the characters in this series. Rachel is always "thinking" the same things i would think, like 'who wouldnt want the donut' or about how yummy Mason is. Maggie Shayne is a great author with great stories to tell. I highly recomend all of her books!

Even though this was a short story it didn't disappoint. I am really loving this series by Maggie Shayne and I can't wait for the next book to come out so that I can have more of this story that she has created. You could easily read this one without the first book but reading the first will make it SO much better!

I loved seeing Rachel and Mason again, but I am over the moon excited I got to see how Myrtle was doing in the novella.

Rachel was blind for 20 years and now she can see, she is going to need a little time to adjust but can she stay away from Mason long enough to adjust the way she needs to. Well that is not going to happen right now because she needs Mason's help.

Mason also needs some time to adjust after his brothers suicide and after discovering his brothers deepest darkest secret. He has taken over taking care of his brothers family but all he thinks about is Rachel so when she texts saying she needs him, of course he is going to drop everything and run to her side.

They must set everything aside and find Rachel's' assistant/best friend who has gone missing. With the sexual tension way to high and Rachel's senses on high trying to find Amy, you ask yourself how much time do they need to adjust?

I am so happy to see this confused couple again cant wait for book 2 in this series. I give Dream of Danger 5 out of 5.

    Good story line

The story line was good, the back story was interesting. I may buy the other books to catch up. I just wish there were a lot less cursing. As a writer you should have a better vocabulary. I know people talk like that but we don't have to. For me it devalues the story, but not bad for a freebee

    Fantastic, addictive series

Mystery, suspense, spicy, main characters, love; it's all there. I've read all three, available books in the series. Can't wait for the next. Well worth the purchase.

    Love this Series. Highly Recommend!

I love this series because it builds one upon the other and you can watch the character build a relationship based on mutual respect and feelings.

If you're looking for a mystery with a budding relationship built into it this is a read for you.
