Meet the Author

About me, huh? Well, my official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn’t it? I’m a storyteller who hears teenager’s voices so loud I have to write them down. I love the idea of sports even though sports hate me. I’ve dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon. But always, always, writing books calls me home.I’ve had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It’s the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands… thank you for reading. As for the rest of it, I’m short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can’t seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and four massive cats.

What a fun taste of what¿s to come in the Hayle Coven series. I

What a fun taste of what’s to come in the Hayle Coven series. I read this short novella that accompanies this series after I read book 1 Family Magic, which I highly suggest so it’s easier to understand more who the characters are and what their roles in this family of magic are.

Syd is an endearing character, full of teenage angst and defiance often seen in her interactions with her mother, the coven leader. Always bumping heads with her, all she wants is to be normal. This chick literally attracts supernatural attention though. It’s fun to see how she handles things from trying to be normal by getting a job at a quirky salon with an equally eccentric owner who thinks she’s gifted.  Not only does Syd seem to fail each time she resists using her magic, which makes her physically ill for some unknown reason, things seem to fall apart as she awakens something possibly sinister in her own house. Will this ‘echo’ be friendly or not? She’s definitely reluctant to fix the problems arising from the magic she leaks out all over the place.

I love how Syd’s reactions to things sometimes are pretty normal, but sometimes not. She does the best she can dealing with crazy stuff happening around her, even though she doesn’t have full control of her magic. Her stubbornness makes her stick out in the coven like a thorn but that’s what makes her likeable and more real.

Full of teenage angst, magic and funny surprises. I love this series so far and can’t wait for more!

    Blah

I'd give zero if I could. It lost me at the end of the second page. Bleh. It was boring and short.
