Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Edward A. Wolpert, MD, PhD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: Dr. Conigliaro discusses the process of dreaming, dream formation, and dream interpretation in both psychodynamic and physiologic terms. He then presents a multitude of clinical examples to demonstrate dream interpretation in psychotherapeutic situations.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is twofold: to summarize and elaborate on Freud's view of dreaming; and to demonstrate the use of dream interpretation with patients. These objectives are well met; the book is a treasure-trove of clinical examples.
Audience: The book is meant for mental health workers of all disciplines who are interested in the dynamics of their patients and of the clinical situation.
Features: The explication of numerous dreams, and the inter-relationship between treatment and dream interpretation is magnificently presented.
Assessment: A most useful book, filling a need that has been apparent for years.

Conigliaro, an instructor and practitioner of psychiatry and psychoanalysis, elaborates on Freud's concepts of dreams by sharing his own interpretations of a wide variety of illustrative dreams. In addition, he provides clinical illustrations which focus on the analyst's internal processes as well as the patient's. Intended for psychoanalytic trainees, beginning practitioners in psychoanalysis, graduates of social work or clinical psychology programs, and mental health practitioners who wish to understand their patients' dreams in light of Freud's theories on dreams. Excellent book for social workers

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Dr. Conigliaro uses language that beginning practitioners will comprehend. His explanations of dream formation are fascinating.
