Overview

Fred the plow horse is born with a dancing tune in his heart. When he hears music, he just has to dance-even if it means overturning the plow and wreaking havoc! Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Fred the plow horse has the wrong job. He can plow if he has to, but he is certain he should be a dancing horse. "From the moment I could stand on all four of my wobbly colt legs, I could hear music. It reached into every part of me, from my scraggly forelock to my shaggy fetlocks." Unfortunately for Fred, most of the people he works with have no music in their collective soul. As Fred searches for a way to make his dream come true, he meets others, both human and animals, who are similarly torn by the wish to pursue a different path, and the reality of needing food, lodging and companions. Fred is funny from the beginning, but becomes more and more likeable as the book progresses and he finds ways to help his fellow travelers, even at the expense of his own dreams. Fred is a thoroughbred of a friend and makes for a very enjoyable read. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
