Overview

At last, USA Today bestselling author Lynn Kurland delivers her newest time travel romance. In the 1200s, Amanda of Artane has one summer to choose from her suitors—and find love forever.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Bestselling author Lynn Kurland creates another magical time-travel romance in this love story pairing Jake Kilchurcn (England, 2005) and Amanda de Piaget (England, 1217). Amanda has been given the summer to pick a proper suitor out of a depressing crowd of gold-diggers. Jake's car gets stuck in the mud in front of a castle rumored to be haunted; and the following day, he and his car have a mysterious accident. Then centuries collide, dropping Jake onto a muddy field for Amanda to discover. Their storybook romance and his determined transition from 21st-century artisan to 13th-century warrior, all to win Amanda's hand, is charm itself. Readers will enjoy Jake's forays back into the future, where he is taken for a silly reenactment tourist, and will delight in the cameo appearances by characters who have starred in earlier books. Interviews & Essays

Heart to Heart Interview with Lynn Kurland

Heart to Heart: What was your inspiration for Dreams of Stardust? Do you have a favorite character in the book?

Lynn Kurland: I know a fabulous jeweler near Seattle called Foxfire -- they do these amazing things with things that sparkle. A trip there inspired me to explore the possibilities of not only gems but also the facets that people have that often go unappreciated. My favorite character in this book has to be the hero, because he's willing to sacrifice so much for the woman he loves.

HtoH: As a writer, what do you find to be the challenges and advantages of time-travel romances?

LK: The challenges are keeping historical details straight; the advantages are the limitless possibilities for humor that having a hero or heroine centuries out of their time provides!

HtoH: What was your first encounter with medieval times? What kind of research do you do for each historical?

LK: I must give credit where it's due -- my first romance was Jude Deveraux's The Black Lion. The chivalry, pageantry, and bigger-than-life characters had me hooked. Mix that up with a little of Monty Python's The Holy Grail, Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and John Steinbeck's The Acts of King Arthur, and I just couldn't stay away from the time period. I read lots of biographies and histories, the more obscure and unedited, the better. I choose the particular year, make sure I have historical figures in their proper place and time, then go from there.

HtoH: You are such a versatile writer, from time-travel romances to ghost stories to pure historicals. Is there a genre you prefer?

LK: I have to admit I'm a sucker for a good ghost story, but only when the ghosts are of the endearing, matchmaking kind. Again, [ghost stories have] great potential for humor and delightful perplexities, with the poor mortals just trying to get through the day while being haunted!

    lynn kurland/ dreams of stardust

This is in her time lined series. It is a good series. Great for those that are into historical, with just enough of the present to catch the rest of our attentions.

    Too many characters

I read the back cover and bought the book with high expectations only to be so disappointed. It's wordy. Choppy. Distracting. Story and plot seem interesting but the romance is so boring. There is no fizzle. And worse, Jake falls in love at his site...b/c she is so beautiful. That's great but what other qualities does Amanda have. Not much. A real disappointment. I invested hours and never finished. I just had to put it down and move on. Frustrated.

    interesting

i like most of kurland's books but i wish that she would write in order. there is nothing more annoying than reading about the same family in different books out of order. None of the timelines match and characters introducted in earlier novels are not seen here. Read the book with Jessica and Richard, which was written years before this one, and you'll see what I mean.

    It's About Many Characters

This book dwelled on many characters, some of whom I'd read about, some I look forward to reading about. That's why I loved this book - I was thoroughly engrossed in wanting to read more about the characters, especially Kendrick, whom I'd only read about in 'Tapestry.' I will definitely get all the books I can by Ms Kurland. I kind of overlooked the fact that the hero here, Jake, and his love, Amanda of Artane, for whom the entire story is based, were nearly reduced to being secondary characters who saw little of each other because I was interested in all of Amanda's other relatives. This approach will not please everyone and it's probably not good to do it often, because the point of a romance is usually romance, which is almost non-existent here.

Medieval times, time travel and romance = An Excellent Read

I was swept away into medeival times and LOVED every minute of it. One of those slow start, but then can't put down novels. Romance was not the only focus here, the story is about family and brotherly love, turning your back on everything one knows as 'right' to dream of true love and keep it. A great read, with loveable characters, very early 'Roberts'-ish. I will definately buy another Kurland.

Sprinkles Of Stardust All The Way From 2005 to 1227

A sense of déjà vu overcame him when Jackson Alexander Kilchurn IV laid eyes on a portrait depicting a forbidding castle overlooking the sea. The name Artane whispered through him and hence he finds himself driving towards it. His Jag suddenly spins and he is thrown back in time to 1227. There, he falls in love with the beautiful, spirited and aqua eyed Amanda of Artane, the woman medieval ghosts had waxed rhapsodies over for centuries. And it was no wonder. Angels must have wept when they saw her face. Of course, to win the heart of a true gem leads Jake through many obstacles- the wrath of Amanda¿s brother Nicholas, the cunning and deceitful Ledenham, and battling in the lists against all the De Piagets. Jake is also aware that Rhys De Piaget would never hand his daughter over to a mere merchant. Thus he must find a way to retrieve his wealth from 2005 and convert it to medieval uses in 1227 in hopes of receiving land and title from the King. I, myself, am a sucker for time travelling romance, especially when medieval meets modern times. However, the one thing that prevents me from gushing about this star-dusty book is this : it seems to focus more on Jake¿s training in the lists to be a knight than his actual love for the exquisite Amanda. The unification between the protagonists was substandard. It was not built on, it did not blossom nor did it flourish and grow. It just happened with no resonating climax. High spirited Amanda could be described as a woman ahead of her time but her constant yearning for freedom can be rather ingratiating, especially when she succumbs to stupidity that leads to danger for her well intentioned brothers. But since it is riddled with humorous dialogue and witty exchanges between the adorable De Piaget brothers and the noble and likable hero, we can forgive the flaws. Here, Lynn Kurland unfolds a heartwarming story of two people born eight hundred years apart united by love and passion amidst jewel studded tapestries unfurling silkily like stardust from the skies. Dreams of Stardust will earn a host of new fans for Kurland, sending them scurrying about looking for her backlists.

    Dreams Of Stardust

After overhearing a heated debate between two ghosts over who the most lovely lady of all time is end when a third ghost mentions a name that silences the first two, Jake Kilchurn is thrust backward in time where he meets all three ladies, including the third, Amanda di Piaget. Mandy is a woman ahead of her time, and has retained her independence despite a number of suiters who have sought her hand. Jake falls for her hard, but before he can marry her, finds himself separated from her by time once more. ....................................... **** Readers will be heart warmed when the re-encounter old friends from past novels. Ms. Kurland deftly navigates the complexity of time paradoxes and the space time continuum to tell a sweet tale of true love defying the laws of reality. ****

    more from this reviewer

    terrific time travel romance

Doing his cheap father a favor was the first mistake, but Jackson Kilchurn IV delivers the papers to Gideon Piaget of Artane Enterprises, but not before being mugged in the parking lot. Jake¿s bad day turns worse when Gideon informs him he will need to obtain the signature of his father at Artane. Already feeling a weird deja vu pull by the castle and somewhat excited that he will see a jewelry vault as he designs and creates jewelry, Jake reluctantly agrees. Near Artane Castle, Jake has an accident. --- Jake regains consciousness in a dungeon. Adjusting to his circumstances, he persuades his hosts, the dePiagets that he was mugged, but gets a bigger shock to learn that somehow he was knocked out in 2005 but awakened in 1227. Meanwhile Amanda dePiaget must select a spouse. She finds Jake whose fashion is odd and his beliefs weird refreshing especially since he seems oblivious to her wealth. Jake falls in love with Amanda, but realizes he offers nothing to her unless he returns to the twenty-first century to pick up his gold and then somehow comes back to his beloved. --- DREAMS OF STARDUST is a terrific time travel romance that readers will appreciate due to the likable lead couple. The story line insures fans will believe that Jake went back in time because of his struggles to adjust to the era yet his ability to accept his lot. Having the hero wearing strange modern clothing and spouting odd social and philosophical notions stun his hosts and excite his beloved add to the feel that he is out of time (literally and figuratively). Lynn Kurland provides a fine tale that proves she is a skilled timekeeper.--- Harriet Klausner
