Overview

Published in 1890, this remarkable collection of dreams is notable for its surreal, poetic intensity.  Some of the dreams are allegorical, while others have a wild quality to them, as if they flowed directly from the author's unconscious onto the page.  Includes what is perhaps Schreiner's best-known short piece, "A Dream of Wild Bees."

About the Author

Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a South African writer and feminist.  Her novel The Story of an African Farm (1883) is considered a classic, and her pioneering study of socialism and gender, Women and Labour, became an inspiration for feminists around the world. She also penned an introduction for Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Women.
