Overview

This recording is one sleepy-time program that offers high quality music for both adults and children. American soprano Heidi Grant Murphy presents a charming variety of beddy-bye tunes ranging from favorites like Brahms's "Lullaby" and Fauré's graceful "En Prière" to lesser-known gems by songwriter Alec Wilder. Murphy's approach is tender and true throughout, and this disc's gentleness is enhanced by the playing of Auréole, a trio comprised of flutist Laura Gilbert, violist Mary Hammann, and harpist Stacey Shames. Together they perform a program that is soul-soothing without being soporifically predictable. Murphy's fresh-voiced approach even gives heart and soul to an overfamiliar tune like "Mighty Like a Rose." She triumphs over the linguistic challenges of this international material -- ranging from Portuguese, Irish, and Hungarian to Greek-- although her Yiddish in "Ver Hot Aza Yingele" may lack authentic savor. But she is confidently masterful in the Hungarian song, "Hommage à b.b." by composer Jonathan Elliot, an affectionate tribute to the composer and folklorist Bela Bartók. Even if having finally gotten the kids to sleep seems like unsurpassable bliss, this disc proves that even greater joys exist.
