Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lois Rubin Gross
In most places, only one Hanukkah song ever makes the top ten story time list—"I Have a Little Dreidel." How nice to have an illustrated version of the song to give children some visuals as they sing along. Three sunny, round-faced tots act out the lyrics to the song by constructing their dreidel from clay, drying it on a windowsill, painting it and, of course, spinning it. The final two-page spread opens to reveal an engineered paper dreidel that spins when the book is opened. The book presupposes that the readers know the tune because no music is provided. Also, there are no directions or explanation as to how to play the spinning top game. The repetitive verse, "Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay, And when it's dry and ready, Then dreidel I shall play," is also missing from the text (except on the back cover) meaning that the song leader will have to fill in the absent part with the kids. Still, the pastel toned pages and the joyous children will entertain little ones just learning the song and the holiday game, and readers will love opening and closing the book to see the dreidel spin.
