Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Playing dress-up has never been so much fun. Through cumulative text and rebuses, this upbeat picture book traces a girl's elaborate preparations for a party--from putting on shiny shoes and a fancy hair ribbon to adorning herself with earrings, perfume and a handkerchief edged with lace. Readers are in for a surprise, too, as Neitzel cleverly conceals the fact that this is indeed dress-up until suddenly mother appears--``This is my mother who said, `Oh, dear!' '' She promptly removes each of the purloined items and sends her slip-clad daughter scurrying off to put on her own, more appropriate, party dress. Adding to the festive mood are Winslow's crisp illustrations (her rainbow of fashionable colors appears both playful and chic) and a clear design featuring generous white space. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-- Any child who has ever gotten dressed up in adult finery will love this cumulative story in rhyme. A little girl gets ready for a party by donning a dress with wild prints, then adds shiny black pumps and a number of accessories including a velvet-banded purse and diamond earrings. The items are pictured and named in the verse, which has a ``House that Jack Built'' cadence; they then reappear as a rebus on the right-hand pages. The climax comes when the girl's mother discovers her, reclaims everything, and then dresses her appropriately. The perky, crisp cartoons executed in ink, watercolor, and colored-pencil are exactly right for capturing the sprightly objects and events. The rollicking rhythm, vivid language, and appealing art make a handsome package. --Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA

Parker's colorful, crisp-edged artwork highlights Neitzel's cumulative, rebus-filled verses about a young girl dressing up for a party. She chooses a flashy dress with black buttons, shiny high heels, and a purple bow, and accessorizes with perfume, pearls, rings, diamond earrings, and a handbag containing a lace-edged handkerchief. Properly appalled by her daughter's attire (especially since the items all belong to her), the mother firmly but gently helps the child disrobe and redress in her own party clothes. Young children will enjoy helping to read the rebuses; the repetition and meter make the text accessible for beginning readers, too. A natural choice for the story hour (pair it with Hanrahan's "My Sisters Love My Clothes" ), this will also be welcomed by whole-language classes.
