Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Calling all football players! Here is another book in the series "Football Stars Up Close," and it calls out to any young reader who has dreams of being a successful player at any level. What happens when a young football player gets an injury that threatens his hope of ever being able to play again? Brees received a shoulder injury. It effectedhis throwing arm, and spelled disaster especially fora quarterback. After therapy for his shoulder, Brees changes teams but has serious doubts as to whether he can ever regain his strong throwing power. Football and sports of all kinds has been his life. It was a difficult time for him, as young readers will feel. Even photographs in the book show him doing his very best. Working hard as he can, in 2000, he finally earns an award given by sports reporters and coaches as the best football player in the whole country! In 2001 he is picked to play for the San Diego Chargers team. He tries as hard as ever but is unable to lead his team to victory. Reading about how difficult it is to realize a goal makes this an interesting story for young sports players. Winning is not everything. The book includes a glossary of sports terms, and a time line of Brees' career, plus bibliographic references to discover more about him. Brees is called a ?Comeback Champion" and after reading the book readers will know why. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy
