Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
"Simply put, his art blows me away," exults decorated film director Frank Darabont in reference to Struzan, whose unique artistic vision changed the face of modern cinema. Setting the stage for this magnificent retrospective is George Lucas's glowing foreword, where he writes, "Drew has the talent not only to capture the characters faithfully, but to enrich them with something a little grander, a little more glorious and more romantic." Struzan's humble beginnings failed to suppress his notorious talent as he embraced "the spirit of an artist" and channeled his creativity into commercially viable artworks. In this companion to The Art of Drew Struzan, section introductions by wife Dylan introduce readers to various aspects of Struzan's career, from album artwork for Black Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to iconic movie posters for cult classics and blockbusters alike: The Goonies, E.T., Back to the Future, and perhaps most famously, Star Wars. As noted in the general introduction, the gorgeously reproduced images do not comprise Struzan's complete body of work, but they do reflect the wide scope of his talent and interests. Brief forays into publishing and portraiture further highlight the broad appeal of Struzan's art, while the final section of "Personal Works"-comprised of family members and female nudes-reveals a lesser-known though equally appealing segment of his oeuvre. For cinema fans and art collectors, this assortment both sates and whets the appetite for Struzan's iconic art, the last of which is still to come, for "he is, after all, still very much alive."

"The movie posters of your dreams" - GQ

"I can’t recommend picking up Oeuvre enough. Such a great collection of the man’s art; a must own for any movie/pop culture fan!" -Ain't It Cool

"It would be tempting, looking at this massive book, to simply be reduced to a quivering mass of fanboy enthusiasm shouting hosannas, but it's the presentation of the book that denies such a simple response. Save for an introduction by George Lucas, it is almost entirely free of text or explanation, presenting several decades worth of work almost as free association. The effect is both overwhelming and personalizing, as if it were the man's private notebook printed in perhaps the most elegant form possible." - Just Press Play

"The gorgeous art book you must own." - Badass Digest

"... incredibly comprehensive and gorgeously presented... if you've got a poster-geek in your life, this is a must for them." - Movies.com

"If you're a fan of pop art, Star Wars or Drew Struzan, Ouevre would make a fine addition to your library." - Topless Robot

"A must own book for any movie or art lover." - Geek Tyrant

Library Journal
Struzan's remarkable film posters have been the subject of several previous collections. This volume takes a different tack and presents an overview of the artist's entire canon. Divided into sections, the book covers music (album covers for everyone from Benny Goodman to Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath), publishing (numerous book covers, although mostly related to films), commercial (again filmcentric but includes older properties like Frank Sinatra and the Three Stooges), and personal works (nudity alert!). The book's main course remains Struzan's singular film art, for which he is all but unrivaled. Typical of the publisher, the reproductions are top quality, and the volume sports several trifolds for his noted Star Wars and Back to the Future art plus some never-before-seen material (die-hard Star Wars and Indiana Jones fans will be seriously geeking). VERDICT Struzan's art has touched millions for whom his posters are as much a part of the film experience as the trailers and the popcorn. For its breadth and variety of work, this book is the equivalent of a Struzan museum exhibit catalog and is sure to wow his many fans. This can do double duty in graphic arts and film collections.—Mike Rogers, Library Journal
