School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-8The first book covers the title concepts, with special emphasis on helping children cope emotionally. Alcohol clearly states that alcohol is a drug that can have dangerous effects on one's body and behavior, while acknowledging that its use is accepted by most cultures. Nancy Nielsen's Teen Alcoholism (Lucent, 1990) offers more information on its history and treatment, and the alcohol industry. In both books, comic-book style story lines help illustrate concepts presented in each chapter. Full-color photos appear on every page. Both titles have a list of organizations for information and support. The clear writing style and open format make them useful for reports and for general interest reading. However, the audience is unclear; most of the photos and illustrations are of teens, but the format, type size, and limited amount of information will not attract most YAs.Elizabeth Trotter, Scott County Public Library, Georgetown, KY
