Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Allison Fetters
When Mel and her family move to Springfield, she experiences many familiar feelings—for anyone who has ever been the new kid. Although Mel does not really know anyone, she focuses her attention on her true love, basketball. As a player of the freshman team, she is sad to learn that one of the junior varsity players, Leslie, has been injured in a car accident. This bad news quickly turns in Mel's favor as she is selected to replace Leslie on the team. Mel sets out to prove herself as a valuable member on the team while trying to deal with the taunting of several members on the freshman team who are envious of her new position. Mel takes the high road as she responds to the reactions of the freshman girls. Her actions cause the freshman girls to reflect upon their behavior and eventually to apologize. In the end, everyone comes together as a united team. The book provides several resources, such as, a glossary, discussion topics, writing prompts, and a brief history of women's basketball. Part of the "Jake Maddox Sports Stories" series. Reviewer: Allison Fetters

Gr 3–6—In Cheer Captain, Julia wants to become captain of the cheerleading squad at her new middle school. However, she worries that if she does, it could harm her friendship with Ava, another cheerleader and a friend. In Drive to the Hoop, Mel is also new in town. She has a chance to move up from the freshman basketball team to JV, but this upsets the other freshman players. Mel, like Julia, wonders if she can form friendships while being successful in her sport. Both easy chapter books deal with popularity and competition from a female perspective, which is a nice niche to fill. Unfortunately, the stories are contrived, and the illustrations are poorly executed. These hi/lo titles are extremely formulaic but are likely to circulate and could be considered for larger collections.—Elizabeth Swistock, Jefferson Madison Regional Library, Charlottesville, VA
