Drivin' Blues

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Roberta Penn
Summertime, and the driving is expensive! But the gas-price blues won't even come to mind if Drivin' Blues is on the CD player. This compilation of cruisin' tunes slides into first gear with Homesick James's guitar slippin' and shakin' through "Hawaiian Boogie," steadies into second with Peg Leg Sam and Baby Tate's acoustic romp on "Who's That Left Here 'While Ago," and is ready for overdrive with Willie Willis's "Drivin' Woman Blues." The famous -- Elmore James ("Elmore's Contribution to Jazz"), John Lee Hooker ("C.C. Rider"), Jimmy Reed ("I Ain't Got You"), Mose Allison ("7th Son"), Ike and Tina Turner ("Sweet Rhode Island Red") -- and the obscure -- Dan DelSanto ...

Rider"), Jimmy Reed ("I Ain't Got You"), Mose Allison ("7th Son"), Ike and Tina Turner ("Sweet Rhode Island Red") -- and the obscure -- Dan DelSanto ("White Feathers in the Coop"), Roy Dun ("Further on Down the Line"), Big Chief Ellis ("Louise") -- are along for the ride, but each cut captures that feel of freedom when you're master of your destiny behind the wheel. Since the mix of electric and acoustic tunes are uptempo, the set could just have easily been called Cookin' Blues, but until kitchens have the sex appeal of the automobile, Drivin' Blues serves as that roadtrip tape you never had time to make.
All Music Guide - Campbell
Drivin' Blues compiles 19 excellent tracks from the vaults of Trix and Muse records centered loosely on a driving theme. While maintaining the theme is an unnecessary stretch, this 32 Blues budget set is chock full of memorable and enjoyable contributions from the likes of John Lee Hooker's "C.C Rider," Memphis Slim's "Let the Good Times Roll Creole," Ike and Tina Turner's "Sweet Rhode Island Red," and Peg Leg Sam's "Fast Freight Train."
