Overview

We plot. We plan. We assume things are going to go a certain way. And when they don't, we find ourselves in a new place—a place we haven't been before, a place we never would have imagined on our own.

It is the difficult and the unexpected, and maybe even the tragic, that opens us up and frees us to see things in new ways.

Many of the most significant moments in our lives come not because it all went right but because it all fell apart.

Suffering does that. It hurts, but it also creates.

This book is an exploration of the complex relationship between suffering and creativity, driven by the belief that there is art in the agony.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Ask any creative person to describe the most pivotal moment of his or her life, and chances are they will describe a nexus of emotional upheaval and even physical deprivation. Such moments of crisis and uncertainty causes personal suffering, but they also provoke us to rethink everything essential; in effect, to create ourselves anew. In this book, Pastor Rob Bell delves into the complex twine of suffering and creativity.
Publishers Weekly

While Bell's books Velvet Elvis and Sex God received generally strong reviews, this effort to understand the relationship between suffering and creativity feels superficial and overly self-conscious. Few readers will dispute Bell's gentle assertions: that life can be extremely difficult and capricious, that it is often difficult to find God amid suffering, that suffering has a great potential to unify disparate people, and that great bursts of creative energy can arise from pain. Bell explores these issues not by covert biblical exegesis-which was a surprising and welcome highlight of Velvet Elvis-but new-fashioned storytelling. Bell weaves inspiring stories of people who turned their suffering into something transformative, and many of these stories are memorable. They are certainly accessible: Bell draws from fiction, movies, real-life situations and his own life. These anecdotes do not make a book, however, and Bell's spare prose lacks original insights into age-old theodicy questions. Although the design and layout are first-rate, $35 is a lot of money for a 160-page book that is mostly white space. (Aug.)

Biography

Reverend Rob Bell is a bestselling Christian author and the founding pastor of Mars Hill, a rapidly growing mega-church located in Grandville, Michigan. He is the featured speaker in the first sequence of NOOMA, a series of spiritual short films that investigate questions of faith and explore the world from the perspective of Jesus. In 2005, he published his first book, Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith, a fresh take on Christianity that emphasizes inclusiveness, flexibility, love, and forgiveness. His 2007 follow-up, Sex God, explores the connections between sexuality and spirituality and was described by Publishers Weekly as a book that "joyfully ties, and then tightens, the knot between God and humankind."

Bell and his wife, Kristin, live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with their two sons.

Good To Know

A few interesting outtakes from our interview with Bell:

"I've never had a cup of coffee."

"A couple years ago, I hit my head doing a flip on a wakeboard and for three days I had to be told who I was and that I was married and had kids."

"The first time I shared the ideas for Velvet Elvis with a publisher, they were convinced that it was actually six books. I remember thinking, Six books? I don't know if I can even write one!"

"My boys and I are into any sort of board you can ride. Wakeboard, skateboard, snowboard, surf board, etc."

A Few Thoughts on Creativity and Suffering

Chapter One

STUNNING, ISN'T IT?

And yet these sculptures were in those bars the whole time.

All these sculptors really did was remove.

Sculptors shape and form and rearrange, but at the most basic level they take away. And there is an extraordinary, beautiful art to knowing what to take away.

When you talk with people who have just received news that they have a life-threatening illness, what do they say?

"Now I must get those hedges trimmed!"

"I've been putting that plastic surgery off long enough."

"It's finally time to join that online Poker club."

No, of course not. They talk about family and friends. They gather those they love as close as possible. They reflect on any amends that need to be made with anybody.

They talk about what matters most.

SUFFERING DOES THAT ...

... IT COMPELS US TO ELIMINATE THE UNNECESSARY, THE TRIVIAL, THE SUPERFICIAL.

There is greatness in you. Courage. Desire. Integrity. Virtue. Compassion. Dignity. Loyalty. Love. It's in there - somewhere. And sometimes it takes suffering to get at it. It's in there.

    AWESOME

I purchased this book for my 13 yr old niece who requested it for Christmas. Prior to me giving it to her I read the book. This is an awesome, thought provoking, encouraging, and very inspiring book. I wouldn't recommend it for younger children, it is more directed towards teens and over. It is a interesting look at everyday life. It brings to the fore front what we all think and are to scared to say at times. It makes you think "outside the box" and honestly makes you feel reassured that you are not alone. After buying this book and reading it I returned to buy this book once more for myself. It is thought provoking and wonderfully written book. I HIGHLY recommend this book for all to read. Thank You.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

typical Rob Bell, with less Christianity than previous books

First off, if you went to the Drops like Stars tour (or plan to), you don't really need to buy the book. It's exactly like the tour, only being there in person is more powerful. Rob Bell is primarily a speaker more than a writer. If you go and want copies for yourself of the material (including photos) Bell uses in his talk, then this is a great reminder to keep around. I have mine on my coffee table so that I can look through it and remember the lessons learned.

In all, I LOVED the tour show, and I like the book. There are many interesting pieces, and it's the way that Bell brings them together and lays them out that lead to a greater truth. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who is an artist, writer, musician... or has ever appreciated the arts and wanted to be.

For me, the book came at a time when I started intensive counseling, and remembering The God Who Wastes Nothing as Bell describes him has been important in my journey into processing and making sense of my past.

Once again I have much to think about

Got this at just the right time, one week before my father-in-law past suddenly and unexpectedly. Never easy to deal with, but with this video had a framework to begin to process it. You will suffer pain, this will prepare you and challenge you.

    Powerful.

This book grabbed my attention immediately when i read that it was a "few thoughts on creativity an suffering." it was a very quick read but it was so powerful in how the words go straight into your spirit and really speak to your heart. I definitely recommend this book to any person that has ever felt discouraged, hopeless, broken or pain...there is greatness inside you and this book reminds you of that.

    I Also Recommend:

This reassesses how we view suffering and pain.

Bell continues to creatively tell the redemption story by pointing out that the greatest discoveries and the most fascinating ideas come out of having suffered. Suffering sparks an undeniable will to live, to survive, and to thrive. This book is truly eye opening.

I am a huge fan of RB, but...

It really pains me to give this book a bad review. Infact, I have never even posted my comments on a book before, but I feel like this nbook is such a waste...I had to post.
First off, it took me only 20 minutes to read. (and I am not really a very fast reader).
Second, it is a huge waste of paper. Literally. Most pages are blank, or at best has that "one Rob Bell sentence" made to really get you...but they don't.it just falls flat.
This book is all fluff with no substance...or no teaching that RB is usually really good at.
I got nothing from this book. I am actually going to try to take it back tonight and get my $ back.

Do yourself a favor- go to B&N, find a chair and read it there. Then, send mars hill $30.00.

Rob- I really hope the next one is better. Remember, Radiohead was better before they got "cool". Morrissey was better when he was not "Morrissey the vegas show performer". Rob Bell was better when he was DOING and TEACHING something different, not showing everyone how artsy and different he is.
