Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Allison Fetters
Drover, a rather cowardly pup, has the best of intentions when he expresses his desire to stay home with his mother rather than venturing out into the big ol' world by himself. Unfortunately for Drover, all of his brothers and sisters have set the bar high by forging their own way and securing jobs as yard dog, lap dog, guard dog, etc. Forced to find his own place in life, Drover begins his adventure. Not long after the journey begins, Drover rescues a strange-looking bird from drowning. The so-called bird turns out to be a spunky bat named Boris O'Bat. Boris, a native of Austin, Texas, is a bit lost himself but only because he refuses to wear the glasses needed for him to be able to see. Boris motivates Drover to go after his dreams rather than hiding behind his fears. Together, the unconventional duo escapes a couple of close calls, but ultimately, they find their own way. This delightful chapter book is entertaining and contains unexpected lessons for Drover to learn as he figures life out on his own. The reader experiences Drover's fears, dreams, and accomplishments through Drover's first person narrative and quickly warms to this likeable canine. This book is a valuable addition to the early reader's library. Reviewer: Allison Fetters

    what a treat

I have long been a fan of John Erickson's books about Hank the Cowdog and his ranch friends. Now at last he's done a book narrated by Drover, the little sidekick dog. What a treat it was to hear Drover's version of his childhood and the life on the ranch. Even though there have been over 50 books that have come before this one and some fans are claiming there are too many similarities in the stories now, I still find lots to chuckle over. Thanks to Mr. Erickson for some great stories. I also enjoy the songs which seem to be getting more creative each time. The audio cds are great for driving trips.

This is one of my favorite books in the Hank the Cowdog series.

This is one of my favorite books in the Hank the Cowdog series. I really like that it is told by Drover rather than Hank, and is about his life before living on the ranch. It is really funny and a very interesting look into Drover's past.
