Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD(Stanford University Medical Center)
Description: The eighth edition of this classic book, as usual, deserves superlative ratings and is a must for all physicians. Drugs are listed by their chemically proper designation alphabetically and every known reported dermatologic side-effect or complication is reported and referenced. This book has replaced the need for any other books on the subject and is the best resource available.
Purpose: If you need to know if a medication could be causing a skin problem just look up the drug in this book. Herbal supplements, vitamins, and over the counter medications are also referenced. I cannot imagine trying to see patients without this book.
Audience: The audience is all physicians.
Features: The index provides a list of skin diseases alphabetically arranged with the various drugs in alphabetical order that can cause the problem (for example alopecia). There is a list of the 100 most common skin problems caused by drugs and there are color photographs of typically seen drug-induced skin eruptions.
Assessment: Everyone should own this book. I look forward to the new edition every year. It is comprehensive, well-organized and an absolute bargain.
This reference for dermatologists describes the adverse cutaneous side effects of over 800 prescribed and over-the-counter generic drugs. The drugs have been listed and indexed by both their generic and brand names. Each of the alphabetically-arranged entries lists drug reactions involving the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. The final section contains descriptions of the 29 most common reaction patterns, such as acne, bullous eruptions, photosensitivity, and vasculitis. The eighth edition features expanded information on reactions to herbals and supplements. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
