Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Kathleen M. Woodruff, RN, MS, CRNP (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This is a comprehensive, up-to-date therapeutic pharmacology reference book for advanced practice nurses. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to condense the volumes of pertinent information related to pharmacotherapeutic agents. This book presents accurate data in a clear and logical format. It is an important and comprehensive reference that can be used by all advanced practice nurses. The authors do an excellent job of meeting their challenging objectives.
Audience: The authors intend the audience for this book to be advanced practice nurses, in particular, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists. The authors address their target audience, but they also can broaden the audience to include students in advanced practice nursing programs. The authors are extremely knowledgeable and clearly have done an extensive review of the curently available data.
Features: The book has been organized aphabetically for use as a quick and easy reference. Each monograph is clear and concise, providing information on pharmacokinetics, therapeutic purpose, dosing guidelines, and possible adverse effects. The introduction provides basic information such as pharmacology, guidelines for prescription writing, and a listing of approved abbreviations. There are many valuable appendixes covering a variety of topics such as over-the-counter medications, common herbal remedies, conversion information, and comparison charts of drugs in specific classes. The book is comprehensive with no obvious shortcomings.
Assessment: This book was a pleasure to review. It is a wonderful resource that will be well used. Drug information is ever changing and since this book has been updated yearly, the data remains current. I would recommend this book as an excellent addition to any advanced practice nurse's reference library.
From The Critics
Intended for nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, this is the new edition of a handbook for clinicians that contains the critical and often complex information needed for prescribing drugs. In the introductory section, Turkoski (Kent State U.), Brenda R. Lance (Ritzman Infusion Services) and Mark F. Bonfiglio (pharmacotherapy resources, Lexi-Comp, Inc.) review basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. Each of the alphabetically-arranged monographs contains pertinent data on pharmacokinetics, therapeutic purpose, dosing guidelines, and possible adverse effects. The appendix includes sections on topical antifungals, ophthalmic/otic agents, over-the-counter medications, common herbals, conversion information, comparison charts, and other relevant data. This book is similar to the publisher's , except for the introductory material. 4.5x8" Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
