Editorial Reviews

Robin M. Hathorn
This is the latest annual update of Wynn's hybrid pharmaceutical handbook for the dentist. A midsized book, it contains both drug information and sections on oral medicine and dental therapeutics. The purpose is to provide a single handbook with cross-referenced information on disease states, therapeutics, and a drug reference containing both over-the-counter and prescription preparations available in North America. This book succeeds as a single, convenient source of information. The book is meant for the dental professional at all levels, and also for others who have a need for up-to-date drug information or for brief guides to current medical therapeutics. For new practitioners, there is a "cookbook" of specific prescriptions for common oral medicine complaints, and guidelines for clear prescription writing. The handbook is divided into seven parts. Of particular interest is the alphabetical listing of drugs, OTC and prescription, by both trade and drug name, with integral cross-referencing. In addition, the usual information on dosage, contraindications, side effects, etc, information on effects on dental treatment (e.g. Xerostomia, vasoconstrictor contraindications) is given. This is one of the rare handbooks that covers both OTC and prescription products. There are also hefty sections covering oral medicine and dental therapeutics, and an overview of medical therapeutics for common conditions. This book successfully straddles the divide for drug handbooks -- big enough to contain useful information, but small enough not to be unwieldy. Too large for a pocket reference, it will prove its worth in the office because it contains OTC and prescription drugs, and useful sections ondental drug prescribing and oral medicine. With the rapid addition of new drugs to the pharmacopoeia, this year's edition is a valuable addition to the library considering its modest cost.
