School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-8 Woods presents a factual introduction to drugsboth legitimate use and illegal abuse. Included are discussions of over-the-counter drugs and prescribed medications, but more completely, problems associated with recreational drug consumption. The nature of addiction in relation to marijuana, cocaine, uppers and downers, narcotics, LSD and other hallucinogens, as well as tobacco and alcohol, are presented. The book is not didactic in tone nor is it illustrated with vignettes of users as is Geraldine and Harold Woods' Cocaine (Watts, 1985). Charts listing common drugs, their effects and methods of consumption are included. The nondescript black-and-white photographs, although different from those used in the first edition, do not enhance the text any more than those in the original. Those libraries owning the 1979 edition need not purchase this one, for little new information is presented. Gilda Berger's Addiction: Its Causes, Problems, and Treatments (Watts, 1982) or Margaret O. Hyde's Mind Drugs (McGraw-Hill, 1981) would be better as a second purchase. Sue Diehl, Robertsville Junior High School, Oak Ridge, Tenn.
