School Library Journal
Gr 7-12-- Has the drug scene in America changed? Hyde says yes, and she describes the new violence and despair that widespread use of crank and crack have brought to the U. S. She gives a sane and well-focused overview of the major problem drugs, a history of the war against each, and some tough decisions that must be made to control their use. In the first chapter on cocaine and its derivatives, the focus is on the ready availability of crack and the havoc it has caused. In subsequent chapters on heroin, marijuana, alcohol, and cigarettes, Hyde reviews the possible effects of the drug, and explains what has been done to discourage or stop its use. Perhaps the most important discussion comes in the final two chapters, which portray the difficulty of winning a war against mind-altering substances. Hyde explores many solutions: sealing U. S. borders, destroying all domestic production, prosecuting users, and legalization. It is clear, by the book's end, that drug abuse is not a new phenomenon and that solving the current violent turn will not be easy. No discussion of hallucinogens is included other than in the ``Controlled Substances-Uses and Effects'' chart at the end. --Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, VA
