The authors of Children of Alcoholism here provide a commonsense guide for parents confronted with drug use by their children. They compile an extensive list of ``warning signs'' of conditions parents should be alert to in order to help children avoid pitfalls at each developmental stage, and of the steps to take when children of any age fall victim to drug and alcohol abuse. Parents, pre-teens, early teenagers and young adults, along with specialists in the treatment and rehabilitation sector, are heard in this comprehensive coverage of an increasingly serious societal problem. Treatment modes, a drug dictionary, parenting skills (particularly that of listening), referral sources are among the useful elements of this guide. (Mar.)

Youcha, Geraldine & Judith S. Seixas. Drugs, Alcohol & Your Children. Crown. Mar. 1989. c.224p. index. LC 88-20218. ISBN 0-517-57102-1. $15.95. psych ~ Here are two good resources for families concerned about addiction to drugs or alcohol, both offering ``no-nonsense'' advice on how to recognize and treat chemical addiction. Living on the Edge is a ``how-to'' guide for intervention--in which the family, with the aid of an addiction counselor, confronts the addicted member and convinces him or her to seek treatment. It also gives concise examples of actual interventions, guidelines for conducting an intervention, and what to do if intervention fails. Drugs, Alcohol and Your Children is primarily for parents of adolescent children. Counselor Youcha hopes to reach all parents, not just those with addicts. Her aim is to help them understand how addictions occur and to suggest how to prevent a child from becoming addicted. Both guides contain excellent references for further reading and referrals to reputable centers for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. Both are recommended for most libraries.-- Kim Banks, Columbia Univ. Libs.
