Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
These two books deal with drugs and alcohol abuse in the workplace and the responsibilities and implications for managers. Coulson, a specialist in arbitration, has analyzed 59 cases and comments extensively on the facts and legal precedents established by these decisions. Campbell and Graham have compiled a thorough guidebook for managers facing these problems. They use an easy-to-understand format interspersed with excerpts from case histories and policy statements. The authors of both books set out to define the problem and establish parameters to assist managers. Coulson focuses very effectively on workers' rights, while Campbell and Graham look at the situation from a managerial perspective, including formulation of corporate policy statements and responsibilities of supervisors. Both books deal with burden of proof and documentation of evidence. Coulson covers the legal and logistical problems of drug testing and the use of undercover agents to gather proof, while Campbell and Graham again focus on managerial responsibilities. Off-duty and chronic abuses are addressed only by Coulson, while the establishment of Employee Assistance Programs and how to deal with relapses are covered by Campbell and Graham. Both books are valuable for informed lay readers and specialists. Grace Klinefelter, Ft. Lauderdale Coll., Fla.
