Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-A comprehensive resource. Fifty alphabetical entries cover illegal drugs, legal addictive drugs and other substances, and commonly abused prescription and over-the-counter medications. Most entries are 6 to 12 pages long, and begin with the official and street names for the substance in question, its USDA classification if applicable, and an overview of its history. Chemical/organic composition, ingestion methods, therapeutic use, and usage trends follow, as well as mental and physiological effects, reactions with other drugs, and treatment and rehabilitation. Personal, social, and legal consequences are discussed. In addition, entries include supplementary sidebars addressing legal issues, common misconceptions, historical anecdotes, and current debate. Among the additional features is a "Variant Name Index" of the chemical and street names of drugs. Key terms are defined in sidebars and included in the glossary. Resources cited at the end of each entry include books, periodicals, Web sites, and organizations. This well-organized volume is intended as a "medical reference" book for tudents. The sober presentation includes a minimum of black-and-white illustrations and is, at times, technical in tone. The book will be of great value to students working on reports as well as general readers seeking straightforward information on drug abuse.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
