Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Rebecca D. Benfield, CNM, PhD (East Carolina University )
Description: This CD-ROM contains information regarding drug usage with pregnant and lactating women. It is an update of the fourth edition text version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide quick access to current categorical and summary information about drugs in pregnancy and lactation. The authors accomplishes this purpose by facilitating quick assess to information including drug risks, drugs by pharmacological category, fetal risks, and a breastfeeding in a CD-ROM presentation.
Audience: This product can be used by a variety of obstetrical care providers who need current, accurate information for prescribing pharmaceuticals, making management decisions, and answering patient questions regarding drug usage in pregnancy and lactation. The authors are well respected for the accuracy and thoroughness of their past editions as well as the practical and utilitarian qualities of the text that is used in clinical practice.
Features: This CD-ROM reference guide enables the user to quickly locate a drug by topic or name. Handy features include drug name pronunciation and a note pad for personalized comments about each drug. Instantaneous access to information is available under the help menu in the index of topical information and in information by the editors. Sharing of content with patients or between providers is made easy using the print option. The cut-and-paste option allows electronic sharing. Installation is easy, using simple step-by-step instructions and takes only minutes. The book preface and instructions for use of the reference guide provide context for information found in the book and help with navigation and use. One shortcoming is found on the drug classification menu — the target boxes are small and at times it takes more than one click to open the next level of information.
Assessment: This CD-ROM format is a welcome addition to the standard hard copy text format. It is much quicker and easier to use than the hard copy. The structure of the drugs listed by category is helpful in prescribing, especially when the patient has drug allergies. The information provided has been and continues to be current, reliable, and of particular help to those providing care to obstetrical patients and their newborns.
