Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
Accurate but preachy and dull, this reference book about the different types and sources of drugs starts with acetaldehyde (an organic and toxic compound that can result from alcohol) and ends with vicodin (a pain reliever). It offers comprehensive details describing how a drug is classified, the short-term and long-term effects and street names. Sections of interest to teenagers or teachers, such as "prescription drugs" and "marijuana" get pages of attention, complete with pictures and tables. But the writing is often prim, such as "the apparent double standard society applies to alcohol stems from the difference between moderate use of alcohol and its abuse." A section about aphrodisiac drugs manages to be yawn-inducing and stern, sniffing that the "apparent stimulating effects on sexual drives are often the consequence of these drugs reducing inhibition." It is as if the publishers were scared that making a drug sound too interesting via engaging writing would lead a child to start experimenting. However, those looking for accurate, topic-specific reference material, be it for a library or classroom, will likely be able to find what they are looking for here. High school students will be able to find facts and information for research papers and health or biology teachers may be able to glean helpful background. Additional elements include a two-page drug table, large glossary, and index. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman
