It is also the story of his daughter, Cady Worthington, who has an unnatural feeling and love for "The Oaks", the family home in Macon, Georgia. This is also a story about the winds of change in the now South, but makes the reader feel he is reading a book about the "old South". This is a story about love, hate, incest, and tragedy that encompasses the remaining Worthington family. Dola, the cook, who likes her "special tea", and who readers will be especially fond, plays a major roll throughout this novel.
