Overview

Turn each graduated page to help Duckie find her curiously missing ducklings in this beguiling follow-up to DUCKIE'S RAINBOW.

Duckie wants to go for a swim with her family, but where are her ten ducklings? She hunts patiently by the garden shed, around the apple tree, under the wheelbarrow, on the swing, in the bucket, and plenty more places. Meanwhile, to little ones' delight, with each turn of a cleverly shaped page -- each one smaller than the last -- one more duckling appears on the far left-hand side, behind Duckie's back. The cumulative visual joke, rendered in bright, sunny colors and enchantingly simple shapes, will make a big splash with even the littlest listeners, who are sure to be giggling all the while

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With a rounded right edge that resembles an egg, the oversize paper-over-board Duckie's Ducklings: A One-to-Ten Counting Book by Frances Barry does for numbers what her Duckie's Rainbow did for colors. As Duckie searches for her missing darlings, the graduated pages reveal first one, then another, all the way to 10. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Barry's charming duck, who taught toddlers colors in Duckie's Rainbow (2004), returns to help with numbers one to ten. Duckie is ready to take her ten ducklings for a swim, but she can't find them. By the shed, she finds only flowerpots; by the tree, she finds only apples; by the roses she finds only butterflies. When she hears a tiny "Quack," Duckie turns around to discover that her ducklings have been lining up behind her all along. Progressively larger sections of the left-hand page are cut away to reveal one duckling after another as they line up for the count. Young listeners will enjoy the game and the bright adorable collage illustrations on sturdy paper. The final endpapers add something extra: more items numbered one to ten to look for in the story. Reminiscent of Eric Carle's early work, this uniquely shaped, inexpensive numbers lesson belongs in every collection-at least once. (Picture book. 2-5)

Meet the Author

Frances Barry introduced the winsome character Duckie in the eye-popping concept-book debut DUCKIE'S RAINBOW. Of DUCKIE'S DUCKLINGS, she says, "I hope children enjoy the playful pantoesque ('behind you') way of counting ducklings as they follow Duckie in a line. And because children are aware of the 'leg pulling' game adults play when pretending not to see them, they may end up wondering, What is Duckie really thinking?" Frances Barry has worked as a designer of greeting cards and stationery and has painted several public and private murals.
