PreS-Gr 1-Beginning in winter, a little girl and her father visit a pond and watch the changes the seasons bring-people skating, ducks swimming, frogs and salamanders laying eggs, acorns falling, and finally the pond freezing again. The writing is filled with short, declarative sentences, but the story is well crafted. The watercolor illustrations are detailed and colorful, with friendly looking animals that just stop short of smiling. A girl and her father visit a pond, first in winter to skate, and later, as the seasons change, to watch all that is happening. While it is the depiction of seasonal change, not the relationship between father and daughter, that is the heart of the book, the pair's quiet togetherness and the father's patient answering of his daughter's questions are pleasant anchors for the telling. The pictures show plants and animals above, below, and around the pond, sometimes isolating individual animals, sometimes showing all the pond's life. The seasonal changes are not shown as frightening shifts but as parts of a recurring pattern. This is not an exciting, fast-paced book, but it may encourage children to take a closer look at what is nearby and familiar in the natural world that surrounds them.
