Overview

Now in its Second Edition, this pioneering classic text contains the most complete discussion of DCIS available in the medical market. Includes a DCIS review and also covers biology, detection, diagnosis, pathology, psychology, and the treatment of the disease. Contributing surgeons, pathologists, radiation and medical oncologists, psychiatrists, and a medical geneticist write chapters in this multidisciplinary and comprehensive book. In cases where applicable, both sides of an issue are presented and followed by a summary or commentary from the editors. New to this edition are the deletion of four previous chapters and the addition of seven new chapters. There is a greater emphasis on screening and early detection that includes the increased role of genetics and molecular biology, as well as therapeutic options. The book also reviews standard treatment practices of many breast centers around the world.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

David R. Brenin
This book is entirely devoted to the current understanding, evaluation, and treatment of ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast. The purpose is to provide, in a multidisciplinary fashion, the distinctive and detailed knowledge required to understand, diagnose, and treat patients with ductal carcinoma in situ. This is a very worthy objective and is met by the editor nicely. It is intended for general, oncologic, and breast surgeons as well as basic research scientists in the field of breast cancer research. The editor and contributors are all credible authorities in the subject matter of their chapters. The book is well illustrated with line art and both black-and-white and color images. The references are pertinent and up-to-date. The table of contents and index are adequate and the book has an excellent overall appearance. This is the first book of its kind devoted solely to the current understanding, evaluation, and treatment of ductal carcinoma of the breast. It would be useful to general, oncologic, and breast surgeons as well as medical oncologists, radiation therapists, and pathologists. This excellent reference source should be present in any well-stocked medical library.
Reviewer: Carol Scott-Conner, MD, PhD(University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: First published in 1997, this multiauthored book on ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast quickly established itself as the standard in this rapidly changing field. All aspects of the subject are covered in a thorough and authoritative fashion.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference on the subject. Sensitive means of detection have led to greater diagnoses of ductal carcinoma in situ, and a wealth of new treatment options have rendered this type of authoritative and thorough treatment mandatory. The book admirably meets the stated objectives.
Audience: The book is written for specialist practitioners, but is so clearly written and illustrated that anyone who has an interest in diseases of the breast will find it useful. It will be most used by surgeons, surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and obstetrician-gynecologists. The editors and authors are all highly credible authorities in this emerging field.
Features: The book covers the entire spectrum from history and epidemiology through diagnosis and treatment. Particularly noteworthy are chapters on ductal carcinoma in situ of the male breast and summary chapters generated from international consensus conferences. The book is lavishly illustrated with high quality photographs. Tables provide additional enhancement and summarize important points. High quality color illustrations in the center of the book are reproduced in the appropriate chapter in black and white, a welcome duplication that allows economy of publication while providing convenience to the reader.
Assessment: This is a unique reference that has already established itself as a standard in the field. The new edition provides a more recent perspective that is thoroughly justified by the rapid advances that have occurred. The book is well written, well researched, and has been carefully edited.
