EXCERPT:
He rested the point of the sword against the table quietly. “I am no fighter, John.”
“That is what I am for, my dear William.” John stood, taking the sword from Will’s hand and placing it on the table. He put his hands on Will’s shoulders and watched as the pretense of courage and boldness drained from the man’s face. “No matter how you kick and cry in revolt, you know that it must be me.”
William’s eyes spilled over suddenly with tears and he swayed under John’s strong hands. “No.” His lips were pressed white together in determination and strands of his hair stuck to his wet cheeks. John had never seen him so torn apart, so vulnerable.
“Yes, Will.” John brushed back Will’s hair with one hand, steadying him with the other. He would not let the unthinkable happen. Not to his dear friend. “You should die if you fought.”
“I shall die if I lose you!” William cried out. John looked into his friend’s face, blotched with anger and anguish. He felt his heart tear from his chest at the words.
Dear Will. He thought in of all the times he had embraced the doctor in friendship, of the jokes they had shared between them. All the kindnesses that had passed from one to the other, all their most private confessions. The time when Will had rescued John from his fever, staying by his side into the night. The happy moments of silence they shared in nature, not needing to speak a word to communicate their thoughts. There was nobody else with whom he shared such a strong and necessary bond. Nobody else whom he loved so dearly.
