Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patricia M. Steelman
What better way to open than with a great description of the dramatic game between Duke and Kentucky in the 1992 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament when Duke won 104 to 103 during the crucial last 2.1 seconds. Howell then traces the history of basketball at Duke from 1906 when it was Trinity College to its championship status in 2011. Howell provides profiles of the coaches such as Vic Bubas (1959 to 1969) and Mike Krzyzewski (1980 to present), key players like National Player of the Year winners Dick Groat, Shane Battier, and Jason Williams, and their records. Part of eight-book series "Inside College Basketball," action photos on the court with pertinent captions and informative sidebars enhance the text. Each volume features a timeline highlighting the team's major historic points, a page of "Quick Stats," another of "Quotes and Anecdotes"—here Duke's rivalry with North Carolina is summarized and the Blue Devils on-campus popularity is evidenced by students camping in tents for best seats at games. There is a glossary, a three book further reading list, an ABDO vetted website, and a list of places to visit for basketball fans, plus an index, author note, and a table of contents. This concise history of basketball at Duke University will appeal to elementary school sports fans and young adult reluctant readers. With its high price tag of for forty-eight pages, libraries should weigh this purchase carefully. The quality is good if the potential readership merits the expense. Reviewer: Patricia M. Steelman
