Meet the Author

Allen Hedrick, M.A., CSCS*D, FNSCA, coach practitioner, was named the first-ever head strength and conditioning coach at Colorado State University at Pueblo in September 2009. He earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University at Chico and his master’s degree from California State University at Fresno. For three years he worked as a strength and conditioning coach at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He then worked as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at the United States Air Force Academy, also in Colorado Springs, for three years before being named the head strength and conditioning coach at the academy, a position he held for nine years. In that position Hedrick was responsible for the strength and conditioning programs for football and volleyball while overseeing the academy’s entire strength and conditioning program.

Hedrick then moved to the National Strength and Conditioning Association's headquarters, also in Colorado Springs, as the head strength and conditioning coach and later as education coordinator. Hedrick stayed in that position until moving into his current position at CSU-Pueblo.

During his career, Hedrick has worked with a variety of athletes, from elementary school age to professionals and Olympic medalists (speed skater Bonnie Blair and Greco-Roman wrestler Matt Ghaffari). Hedrick’s work has been published over 100 times in a variety of publications covering diverse topics, and he has written a book on strength and conditioning for football. He has also produced numerous DVDs on topics related to strength and conditioning, including Strength for Sports Performance (Human Kinetics, 2007). Hedrick has spoken at various conferences and clinics worldwide, including Guatemala, Japan, Australia, and China. In 2003 Hedrick was selected by his peers as the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year.

This is an excellent “go to” resource for athletes, trainers and ordinary folks like me who want to know how to do effective, safe and healthy exercise with dumbbells. I recently had to give up larger exercise equipment for space reasons, but I kept my old dumbbells with the intention of figuring out how to do a good, alternative exercise program. Hedrick’s book fills the bill for me, and more serious athletes and trainers will love it even more.
This is soup-to-nuts, very detailed guidance on using dumbbells for building power, strength, endurance and muscle mass. Hedrick explains and illustrates 78 exercises with step-by-step instructions and very useful reminders about “common errors.” There is a photo sequence for each exercise—you really can’t get it wrong. He provides incredibly customized directions for specific exercises that will benefit coaches and players in 11 top sports, with clearly defined variations that will assist in developing speed, agility, power and balance for athletes, from amateur to pro.
Hedrick draws on his long career as a strength/conditioning coach, mostly in collegiate positions, including a long stint at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His dumbbell manual is authoritative, easy to understand, fully detailed and encouraging in its straightforward approach to sensibly using dumbbells to get healthier and stronger.

I have known Allen for many years.  He has been my "go to guy" when i have had questions about dumbbell training, especially with the olympic lifts.  I found this book to be a great resource for not only the beginner lifter and coach, but also the experienced ones.  I am sure it was difficult to trim down the number of exercises covered in this book.  It covers the spectrum of exercises from simple movements to complicated and technical.  I was happy to see the amount of time spent on the movements geared toward athletes and improving their abilities to handle weights in space and multi plane activities.  Excellent training resource!

Coach Hedrick does a great job of writing a clear, comprehensive and authoritative reference on the subject of training with dumbbells. The content on the history, program design and the benefits of training with dumbbells are interesting and set the foundation for the rest of the book. Coach Hedrick added some great content on how the benefits of training with dumbbells are founded in science and this 20 years of practical experience.
The exercises that are described range from basic to very advanced. However, the exercise selection isn't the focus of the book; this is more than just a menu of exercises. I found the third part of the book very helpful on programming. Coach Hedrick includes much needed information on training for muscle size, speed, power, agility, balance and sport. All of the writing is clear and easy to understand. It is obvious Coach Hedrick knows how to communicate with his writing style; the contents are founded in science, practical experience and have immediate application. I have been coach a number of years and found this work exceptional.
