Robinson clearly explains the diffences among the Templar's enemies and friends in this incredible expose.
Reads more like an action/adventure story than a history book. Lack of citations in the text is not a good thing, regardless of how much of research is done. Great for someone interested in a great story, rather than a boring history book.

Robinson has created a historically factual book while weaving together words to make the book flow very gracefully. The book is easy to read and will keep you wanting to know what will happen in both the Templaric order and the Crusades. A great book to read for people at any level and can be read for fun or for learning.

John J. Robinson¿s account of the Crusades is a fascinating history of an incredible time. Overall, Robinson has done a lot of research on the subject and has written a wonderful introduction of Templar history. Dungeon, Fire, and Sword is an excellent read, especially if you want a deeper knowledge of the Crusader years. The only big disadvantage is that John J. Robinson rites the book more of a fantasy writer than a historian, and therefore sometimes changes not all in response to the historical facts.

Books like this often invite scholarly criticism over the selection of the source material, the interpretation of the material, the conclusions of the author and other esoteric points. I lack the credentials to comment on those things. But, taken at face-value, this book does, by following the history of the Templar order, manage to bring a coherency and continuity to a tumultuous period in history. It recounts tales of courage and cowardice, honor and betrayal, faith in the cause and expediency, nobility and avarice that are beyond any imaginings of a Hollywood scriptwriter. And we see the roots of conflicts between Christian, Muslim, and Jew that plague the world to this day.
