Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Ah, the glamorous life of a superhero—fighting crime, swinging over the city, andgoing to a back-to-school clothes sale?! Well, if your name is Peter Parker, that's how you will spend your day when your Aunt May drags you to Mega Mart to hunt for bargains. Fortunately for Peter, the villainous Sandman has just accepted a contract to trash Mega Mart for not paying its mob protection money. This gives Peter just the excuse he needs to ditch his aunt and change into his Spider-Man suit. Unfortunately for Peter, a security camera records him switching to Spidey. So, if he succeeds in taking down the Sandman, he'll still have to convince an unscrupulous security guard to not reveal his secret. This self-contained story modernizes classic Spider-Man comic tales by introducing elements that did not exist when Spidey first appeared in the 1960s, such as Wal-Mart-like stores, cell phones and security cameras. The book's sturdy library binding makes it an attractive choice for libraries, dentist offices, and waiting rooms that expect a lot of heavy handling of their books. Even so, the book's high price may strain some budgets; librarians may want to look into the digest-form "Marvel Age Spider-Man" books that collect several issues in a single volume, instead.
