Duty Honor Country
A Number of books have been written about Marine Boot Camp but very few if any about the making of a United States Marine officer. The individual who’s job it will be to lead those elite Marines. This book points out the physical hardships a ‘candidate’ must go through as do many others but none touch on the physiological as this one does.
Individuals from all walks of life are attracted to the mystic of becoming a Marine but only a handful to the level of leading them. What does it take to lead the finest warrior class in the history of the world? People all over the world know the word ‘Marine’ but not many realize they are only a handful. Like the Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae Pass who turned the tide against Xerxes and his million man Persian Army , the Marines turned the tide in World War I at the Battle of Belleau
Woods, again in World War II at Guadalcanal, again in Korea at the Inchon Landing, Vietnam at the Battle of Hue in the Tet offensive where the Viet Cong ceased to exist as a fighting force. General Schwarzkopf attributed the lightning victory of U.S. forces over Iraq to the Marines in Gulf War I and the decisive battles in Gulf War II to the vicious fighting of the Marines in Fallushah. Over and over again they are the lightning rod of American forces.
Why is this so and what gives them that infallible attitude? Why do enemy forces cringe when they find out they are fighting or going up against U.S, Marines on battle? If truth be known they are a small force comparatively speaking about 200,000 out of a population of 310 million.
In this book follow the exploits of the author and learn first hand the hardships they endure. You can actually feel the cadence, the fast tempo and sense the sights and smells of Officer ‘Boot Camp’. How the DI’s immediately spot the perceived ‘weak ones and how they weed them out through the physical fitness programs or by the tactics employed at ‘mail call’. See how the break down individualism to foster the ‘team spirit’, how ‘esprit de corps’ and ‘invincibility’ enters the picture. One learns quickly they are part of a ‘Band of brothers’ that death comes before they would let their comrades down.
If you enjoyed the hit movie ‘An Officer and a Gentlemen’ and its romantic subplots, you will thoroughly enjoy this book
It is no wonder no other Country has a cadre like the feared United States Marine Corps. You learn quickly about God, Country and Corps, not necessarily in that order!
Future leaders have that one intangible ‘Self Discipline’ and it is no wonder after reading this book why so many of our present leaders whether military, politician or corporate world have run the gauntlet becoming a United State Marine Corps Officer devoted to Duty Honor and Country
