Overview

Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt star in director Terry Gilliam's weird tale about the apocalypse and time travel in 12 Monkeys. Universal has done excellent work on this collector's edition DVD, starting with a very nice 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The colors in 12 Monkeys are all very natural and clear, as are the black levels and flesh tones. Only the slightest amount of edge enhancement is present during the film, though this never presents much of a problem. Overall, this is a very nice-looking print from Universal. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and is also excellently produced. While the bulk of the track is not overly aggressive, most of the movie utilizes subtle sounds in all speakers with dialogue, effects, and music sounding crystal clear. Also included on this disc is French Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. True to its "collector's edition" name, 12 Monkeys includes some very nice extra materials. A commentary track by director Terry Gilliam and producer Chuck Roven is somewhat boring but always informative, and a "Making Of" featurette on the film includes some interesting insights into the production of the film. Finally, there are some theatrical trailers, as well as some typical talent biographies and a few relatively thin production notes. This collector's edition of 12 Monkeys should please all primates looking for a well-executed disc.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
Inspired by Chris Marker's benchmark 1962 short film La Jetee, director Terry Gilliam continues his examination of the real versus the surreal in this mind-bending piece of science fiction. In a vein typical of Gilliam's oeuvre, the film leaps through time almost at will, which produces uneven results. Obviously a play on genre conventions, 12 Monkeys succeeds at creating its various worlds (all with various degrees of grunge and gloom). However, the film spirals off in so many directions it's sometimes a trial to keep track -- but it's also this very quality that keeps it interesting and engaging. Very much a visceral film above all else, Gilliam extracts solid turns from his actors, including a nicely understated Bruce Willis and a cheerfully (and entertainingly) manic Brad Pitt, a surprise Oscar nominee for his supporting role. Almost ten years after the highly publicized director vs. studio debacle with the director's acclaimed 1985 film Brazil, Gilliam and Universal had obviously patched things up, as they distributed this film to great financial success and a place as one of the leading cult favorites of the 1990s.

You have never seen this movie? Seriously? Rent it or buy it. I recommend buying it... you will save the 4.50 you were going to spend renting it, because once you see it, you will want to own it... Great story. Great movie-making.

This is a truly amazing film. My advice: 1. You cannot be interrupted when watching this film, you need to see every single scene and hear every single line 2. Watch it more than once. There's a part in the film where Bruce Willis and Madeline Stowe are in a movie theater watching an old film. The film itself is a reference to his [Willis's] time travel, and there's a significant line when Willis says ''Every time I see this movie it seems different to me''. That's exactly how '12 Monkeys' is. You can watch it 5 times and each time its a different film. This is an extremely intelligent film. Check it out and pay attention, you won't be dissapointed!!

If you enjoy films with twisted plots and great acting, both Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt do an incredible job in this extremely twisted and thought provoking neo-apocalyptic movie.

This movie makes you thinking of many things. The main idea that went through was could time travel be real and if so could you really change what happend. I won't tell you what i believe but definately watch the movie and ask yourself the same question. If you think you have an answer for it now then watch it and see if you think the same. This movie is completely worth seeing for the plot is great and how the movie was directed. Definately worth it!!!!

For the longest time I wanted to see this movie again. I was very young the first time I watched it and I did not get it at all. Finally was able to see it again just less than an hour ago. It just ran up to my #1 movie of all time. It is so intelligent and makes you think every second after the movie is over. It is a must buy!!!!

This is such an amazing movie! it was the first R-rated one I watched, and I am so so SO glad it was this one! Everything you see and bear comes into play somehow, whether it is a big part of the plot or not doesn't matter.
