Gary Winick's Big-inspired romantic comedy 13 Going on 30 debuts on DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1., and subtitles are available in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Winick as he discusses various aspects of the production, careful to lavish plenty of praise on leading actress Jennifer Garner and male lead Mark Ruffalo. A second commentary track featuring three of the film's producers has a nice slumber-party feel to it, while still offering substantial insight into how the film came together. Deleted and extended scenes, a featurette in which the cast discusses what they were like in high-school, and a pair of '80s vintage music videos round out this solid release from Columbia TriStar.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Jennifer Garner, the babelicious, butt-kicking star of Alias and Daredevil, stakes her claim to America's Sweetheart status with this enchanting wish-fulfillment fantasy. Garner stars as Jenna, an awkward just-turned-13-year-old who yearns to be one of the "Six Chicks," the clique that rules her school. When her birthday party ends in embarrassment at their devious hands, Jenna wishes she was "30, flirty, and thriving," and thanks to some "wishing dust," she awakens as an editor for the fashion magazine that was her adolescent bible. Big, of course, comes to mind, but 13 Going on 30 is actually more akin to Regarding Henry, in which a brain-damaged Harrison Ford slowly recovers his memory and discovers he doesn't very much like the ruthless lawyer he has become. Jenna, too, makes some unflattering discoveries about the choices she made to get where she is, including abandoning her childhood best friend (Mark Ruffalo), who is understandably wary when she reenters his life. The adorable Garner's considerable charm goes a long, long way in sustaining audience sympathy for the misguided Jenna, and there are many crowd-pleasing moments. Among these are when grown-up Jenna re-creates the Thriller music video at a company party, and when she bonds with some preteen girls in her apartment building over the Pat Benatar anthem "Love Is a Battlefield." Mild profanity and adult situations, such as when a towel-clad man emerges from Jenna’s shower (she’s horrified, of course) -- earn the film its PG-13 rating. Girls just want to have fun, but feminists might not appreciate the cautionary subtext that only mean girls are successful in business.
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
Independent director and producer Gary Winick goes Hollywood with 13 Going on 30, a film that does little more than remake Big by changing the gender of the protagonist. Taking the lead for the first time in a movie, Jennifer Garner gives her performance everything she has. She nails down the physical awkwardness of a 13-year-old in a suddenly grown-up body, and she gets the vocal tics just right. The screenplay itself, though not bad, fails to offer up anything original. Anyone should be able to know exactly where this film is going at all times, giving the film the unmistakable feeling that it is little more than a product. Winick keeps the audience in the film with smart casting. One sure way to spot a talented actor is to see someone transcend banal material. In Mark Ruffalo, Winick has his ace in the hole. Ruffalo does not steal his scenes, he saves them -- including a bizarre and finally winning rendition of the monster dance from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. Ruffalo is unable to be anything but completely believable, and he helps Garner modulate her performance so that the audience believes that everyone else in the film never questions that she is 30 even when she behaves like a 13-year-old. Judy Greer, playing the duplicitous best friend like an evil fifth cast member of Sex and the City, offers solid support. There is not a bad scene in 13 Going on 30, but simultaneously, one wishes every scene were better than it is. Had the talent of the screenwriters matched those of the performers, this film would have given Garner the same career boost that Big gave to Tom Hanks.

13 going on 30 has to be about the most underrated movie in hollywood history. it is such an amazingly sweet, wholesome movie that leaves one feeling good about life and about people. the values it teaches are amazingly sound, moral ones, but done in such an endearing manner. any man that does not fall in love with jennifer garner in this movie must have ice water in their veins, and even the main guy is such a kind, considerate, true gentleman. this movie should be shown to as many people as possible.

This surely is one of the cutest movies ever! It's full of laughs and the ending is so sweet! 13 Going on 30 is the best movie to watch after a really sad and/or bad film. It seriously makes you feel better! Guaranteed, you will feel warm and happy after watching it...no matter when you see it!

This movie is pure good-hearted fun. Jennifer Garner is totally convincing as a 14 year old trapped in a 30 year old body. Her wide-eyed exuberance is contagious! You'll find yourself cheering her on as she dives into her 'new life'. There are some great 80's moments for those of us old enough to remember that decade. Mark Ruffalo shines in his role as well. Anyone looking for a fun, sweet movie should give this one a chance. You won't be disappointed.

This is a great movie to watch for a girls night! When I saw it in the theatres, I'm not sure who laughed the most, the 20-30 somethings or the 13 year olds. It was definitely a pleasant reminder of dreams and wishes and sometimes getting exactly what you asked for and finding out you didn't really want it. I'm not sure how a boyfriend or husband would like the movie, but I loved it for a movie to relax and just enjoy.

This movie is beyond good. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo both are wonderful in this movie, and the chemistry between the two is brilliant. The plot is cute, the acting is top-notch, and the outfits Jennifer has are pretty cute, too. A must see.

This is probably the best movie to see with a girl on your second date before she leaves you for some chump. I would recomend this movie to any couple. I however will watch this by myself while crying into my popcorn and junior mints.

This movie is one of my favorites! I enjoyed this movie so much that I must have watched it everyday after I saw it. Jennifer Garner is adorable-I couldn't help but relate to her 13-year-old performance. Mark Ruffalo plays Matt in such a sweet, boy-next door manner it makes you wish every man could be as respectful and kind and just nice like him. The music is cute, the clothes are awesome, and the chemistry between Garner and Ruffalo is there with a force. I loved how the movie had an innocence about it; the language and all the usual disgusting Hollywood stuff is at a total minimum. All I can really say is quickly buy this movie and hope that there's a sequel on the way.

I love this movie! Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are great together. I love the ending. Especially the bedroom scene when Matt is getting ready to get married. Shows each of us 'be careful what you wish for, it might just come true' SOMEONE GET ME A FLUFFY PILLOW!!!!

Coming from a 13 year olds point of view, i think this movie was awesome. It really puts into perspective what really goes through our heads, and helps us to see that we should enjoy our youth while we still can. The characters were extremely well portrayed, and the movie had an excellent plot line. The music was also wonderful and fit every mood for every scene perfectly.

jennifer garner does a fantastice job as jenna. i really love how she is put into adult situations and how she responds to them. i love the thriller dance scene, and how richard (her boss) moonwalks. mark ruffalo is also great as matt, and the younger actors who play young jenna, matt and tom-tom truly fit their part. even before i saw it, i knew i had to add it to my dvd collection!

The story line was predictable and sort of cliche, but I really enjoyed the movie. It's cute, funny and romantic- perfect "girls night" movie.
