Overview

Thirteen-year-old Jenna Shana Dowdeswell has had enough with the trials of adolescence. In addition to being saddled with a devoted-but-nerdy best friend, Matt Sean Marquette, she falls victim to one of the dangers of playing Seven Minutes in Heaven with the coolest kids in school: being stranded without a willing make-out partner. Humiliated, Jenna buries herself in the aforementioned make-out closet, wishing she could skip the whole adolescence bit and move straight into adulthood, and miraculously wakes up just weeks away from her 30th birthday. Of course, a lot has changed since going to bed the night before, not the least of which being an impressive set of womanly curves. The new, older Jenna Jennifer Garner is a successful magazine editor with friends in high places and a lion's share of potential suitors -- including a hockey-playing boyfriend and a swarthy married man. The problem is that her mind hasn't matured with her body; Jenna not only finds living on her own more terrifying than cool, but is quick to dismiss any male over the age of 14 as "gross." Half excited, half mortified, Jenna seeks out Matt Mark Ruffalo, whom she learns she had spurned as a teenager in an effort to join the popular crowd. Gary Winick directed the film, from a script by Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa; Gina Matthews produced. Choreographer Michael Peters -- who died in 1994 -- received posthumous credit, as his choreography from the Michael Jackson Thriller video is used in one scene. ~ Tracie Cooper

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Jennifer Garner, the babelicious, butt-kicking star of Alias and Daredevil, stakes her claim to America's Sweetheart status with this enchanting wish-fulfillment fantasy. Garner stars as Jenna, an awkward just-turned-13-year-old who yearns to be one of the "Six Chicks," the clique that rules her school. When her birthday party ends in embarrassment at their devious hands, Jenna wishes she was "30, flirty, and thriving," and thanks to some "wishing dust," she awakens as an editor for the fashion magazine that was her adolescent bible. Big, of course, comes to mind, but 13 Going on 30 is actually more akin to Regarding Henry, in which a brain-damaged Harrison Ford slowly recovers his memory and discovers he doesn't very much like the ruthless lawyer he has become. Jenna, too, makes some unflattering discoveries about the choices she made to get where she is, including abandoning her childhood best friend (Mark Ruffalo), who is understandably wary when she reenters his life. The adorable Garner's considerable charm goes a long, long way in sustaining audience sympathy for the misguided Jenna, and there are many crowd-pleasing moments. Among these are when grown-up Jenna re-creates the Thriller music video at a company party, and when she bonds with some preteen girls in her apartment building over the Pat Benatar anthem "Love Is a Battlefield." Mild profanity and adult situations, such as when a towel-clad man emerges from Jenna’s shower (she’s horrified, of course) -- earn the film its PG-13 rating. Girls just want to have fun, but feminists might not appreciate the cautionary subtext that only mean girls are successful in business.
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
Independent director and producer Gary Winick goes Hollywood with 13 Going on 30, a film that does little more than remake Big by changing the gender of the protagonist. Taking the lead for the first time in a movie, Jennifer Garner gives her performance everything she has. She nails down the physical awkwardness of a 13-year-old in a suddenly grown-up body, and she gets the vocal tics just right. The screenplay itself, though not bad, fails to offer up anything original. Anyone should be able to know exactly where this film is going at all times, giving the film the unmistakable feeling that it is little more than a product. Winick keeps the audience in the film with smart casting. One sure way to spot a talented actor is to see someone transcend banal material. In Mark Ruffalo, Winick has his ace in the hole. Ruffalo does not steal his scenes, he saves them -- including a bizarre and finally winning rendition of the monster dance from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. Ruffalo is unable to be anything but completely believable, and he helps Garner modulate her performance so that the audience believes that everyone else in the film never questions that she is 30 even when she behaves like a 13-year-old. Judy Greer, playing the duplicitous best friend like an evil fifth cast member of Sex and the City, offers solid support. There is not a bad scene in 13 Going on 30, but simultaneously, one wishes every scene were better than it is. Had the talent of the screenwriters matched those of the performers, this film would have given Garner the same career boost that Big gave to Tom Hanks.

    A Fun Fantasy

In the movie a thirteen year old girl wakes up to find that she has suddenly turned thirty. She realizes that she has completely missed out on the past seventeen years of her life. In the meantime friendships have been made and broken, relationships strained and a personality has developed which her thirteen year old self cannot relate to. In the movie all this happens through magic or in a kind of dream situation. But haven't a number of suddenly realised that we have passed through life and actually missed out on so much? That we have grown into these people that our own past selves wouldn't recognize? While making you think of these things, this movie gives the viewer a wholesome serving of fun, , humour, romance and escapism. It takes you on a trip in time and the best thing is is that time is reversible so that past mistakes can be attended to. The Movies is sweet with a touching romance. It shows how choices once made can change and or set the path of you life. It is a look into who are you real friends and what is really worth living for. It is sure to lift up your spirits on any day. Even when you are at your most frustrated. Young teens as well as older people can enjoy it. And even you macho husband/boyfriend cannot deny that there is some charm in it.A great movie to add to your collection

This movie is what it's like to be 13!

jennifer garner does a fantastice job as jenna. i really love how she is put into adult situations and how she responds to them. i love the thriller dance scene, and how richard (her boss) moonwalks. mark ruffalo is also great as matt, and the younger actors who play young jenna, matt and tom-tom truly fit their part. even before i saw it, i knew i had to add it to my dvd collection!

View from a 13 year old

Coming from a 13 year olds point of view, i think this movie was awesome. It really puts into perspective what really goes through our heads, and helps us to see that we should enjoy our youth while we still can. The characters were extremely well portrayed, and the movie had an excellent plot line. The music was also wonderful and fit every mood for every scene perfectly.

This movie is beyond good. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo both are wonderful in this movie, and the chemistry between the two is brilliant. The plot is cute, the acting is top-notch, and the outfits Jennifer has are pretty cute, too. A must see.
