Overview

After thwarting last season's attempted nuclear attack on Los Angeles, Day 3 finds Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) again fighting to protect the city, this time from a weaponized virus. But Jack is also battling a personal demon---a heroin addiction he picked up while working undercover in a drug-smuggling ring run by terrorist Ramon Salazar (Joaquim de Almeida). At Jack's side throughout Day 3 is his daughter, Kim (Elisha Cuthbert), who took a desk job at CTU in the time between Seasons 2 and 3. Complicating matters is Kim's relationship with Jack's new partner, Chase Edmunds (James Badge Dale), whom she has been secretly dating. Further CTU romance is found between agents Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) and Michelle Dessler (Reiko Aylesworth), whose working relationship has blossomed into marriage. But it's a rocky union that's tested throughout Day 3, by everything from charges of terrorism to exposure to a deadly virus. Following the dissolution of his marriage to the first lady, President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) is deep into his reelection campaign. But privately he is still grappling with the lingering effects of the viral attack carried out by assassin Mandy (Mia Kirshner) during Day 2's final moments. New to the series is Chloe O'Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub), a CTU senior analyst whose computer skills prove helpful during Jack's mission this season and beyond. Day 3 also features the first appearance of Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside), who serves as the new chief of staff for his older brother. While lacking in major guest stars, Day 3 does feature Zachary Quinto ("Heroes") as rookie computer analyst Adam Kaufman, and Daniel Dae Kim ("Lost"), who returns for a second go-round as CTU agent Tom Baker.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
In recent years, very few dramatic shows have captured the public fancy like 24, the televised equivalent of those old cliff-hanger movie serials that left their protagonists in life-threatening situations at the end of every installment. Having established itself previously with two superb seasons -- each telling a story that unfolds over a single day in one-hour increments -- the show began its third year with an even more ambitious story line. This time around, Counter Terrorism Unit agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) succumbs to the demands of narco-terrorists and breaks drug lord Ramon Salazar (Joachim De Almeida) out of prison to prevent the use of a biological weapon unwittingly smuggled into Los Angeles by one of Salazar's mules. As if that wasn't enough, President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), facing a tough reelection campaign, learns that his new lover may be implicated in an extortion plot. There are numerous subplots, one of which revolves around Bauer's trouble-prone daughter, Kim (Elisha Cuthbert), now working at CTU. Overall, the third season is marginally less satisfying than its predecessors, but only because the various parallel narratives are watered down with too many extraneous diversions. It still makes gripping entertainment, though, and there's no shortage of physical action and nail-biting suspense along with the political intrigue. The seven-disc collection will likely make history for one of the supplements: a ten-minute "prequel" to Season 4 that introduces new characters and bridges the between-seasons continuity gap. Primarily, it reveals that Bauer is transferred out of CTU, setting up his adversarial relationship with the unit's new chief. This little back-story is unique to the DVD box; the footage was shot with the collection in mind and won't be seen on air.
